Development of high efficiency solar collector plates. Progress report, January 1, 1975--May 31, 1975 (open access)

Development of high efficiency solar collector plates. Progress report, January 1, 1975--May 31, 1975

Composite metal technology is used to manufacture intermetallic compound (IC) absorption surfaces and to combine them integrally with a composite metal tube-in-sheet collector plate. Heat treatment process for Al--Ni system was optimized and ..cap alpha.. greater than or equal to 0.95 and epsilon less than or equal to 0.3 were obtained over a broad range of compounding conditions. Studies by SEM show that the Al--Ni IC surface is porous, spongelike and the dimensions of its fine structure are of the same magnitude as the wave length range of solar radiation, explaining at least partially the selectivity. Auger electron spectroscopy indicated that rather continuous aluminum oxide layer covers the fine structure of the Al--Ni. Low carbon steel--copper composite has been shown to be a suitable candidate for the collector plate. Additional work is required to resolve the conflicting requirements of the formation of the IC surface and of the manufacturing of the composite metal tube-in-sheet collector plate.

Heat and Mass Transfer in Models of Undeveloped Geothermal Fields (open access)

Heat and Mass Transfer in Models of Undeveloped Geothermal Fields

A brief summary is given of the nondimensional equations and relevant parameters to be used for describing convection processes in the geothermal setting. Characteristic estimates of flow rates and pressure variation (beyond the hydrostatic value) are given. it is shown that the complete equation system can be reduced in complexity by neglecting terms which describe physically insignificant effects. The resulting equations are used to consider the onset of convection in a horizontal saturated porous slab when a realistic model of viscosity variation is used. It is shown that the classical constant viscosity prediction is in error both quantitatively and qualitatively. A calculation is made for the rate of convective upflow in a model fault zone. It is shown that under appropriate conditions it is possible to transport as much as 2-3 x 10{sup 6} kg/day up a fault system with a horizontal cross-sectional area of only 0.3 km{sup 2}.

Analysis of a reported magnetic monopole (open access)

Analysis of a reported magnetic monopole

It is shown that there are several substantive errors in a previous work on a cosmic ray event which is consistent with the hypothesis that it was caused by a magnetic monopole. It is shown that the data points fit to the hypothesis that the responsible particle is a platinum nucleus fragmenting to osmium and then to tantalum. (JFP)

Study of nuclear fragment emission in proton heavy nucleus collision from 10 to 500 GeV/c (open access)

Study of nuclear fragment emission in proton heavy nucleus collision from 10 to 500 GeV/c

We propose to measure the double differential cross section of nuclear fragments (2 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 16), for a given incident momentum, produced by proton heavy nucleus (20 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 80) collisions in the 10 to 500 GeV/c momentum range. Recent experimental results and theoretical speculations suggest collective nuclear motion is initiated by the passage of a fast proton through a heavy nucleus. The novel feature of this experiment is the determination of the energy dependence of the excitation mechanism. Because nuclear fragments are best studied from thin targets, one needs a very high beam flux to obtain sufficient event rates. These considerations make the Internal Target Area with a heavy gas jet target the ideal place to initiate our experimental program. The detection system will consist of four conventional $delta$E- E semiconductor telescopes. (auth)

Estimated refractive index and solid density of DT, with application to hollow-microsphere laser targets (open access)

Estimated refractive index and solid density of DT, with application to hollow-microsphere laser targets

The literature values for the 0.55-$mu$m refractive index N of liquid and gaseous H$sub 2$ and D$sub 2$ are combined to yield the equation (N - 1) = [(3.15 +- 0.12) x 10$sup -6$]rho, where rho is the density in moles per cubic meter. This equation can be extrapolated to 300$sup 0$K for use on DT in solid, liquid, and gas phases. The equation is based on a review of solid-hydrogen densities measured in bulk and also by diffraction methods. By extrapolation, the estimated densities and 0.55-$mu$m refractive indices for DT are given. Radiation-induced point defects could possibly cause optical absorption and a resulting increased refractive index in solid DT and T$sub 2$. The effect of the DT refractive index in measuring glass and cryogenic DT laser targets is also described. (auth)
