Development of a GPC analysis method for estane in LX-14. Progress report, October--December 1975 (open access)

Development of a GPC analysis method for estane in LX-14. Progress report, October--December 1975

A high-speed gel permeation chromatography (HSGPC) method was developed for the molecular weight parameter analysis of Estane as a minor component in LX-14 PBX formulations. Molecular parameters for Estane, so obtained, permitted the evaluation of various aging and accelerated aging treatments on the LX-14 samples. Parameters evaluated were: Number average molecular weight anti M/sub n/, weight average molecular weight, anti M/sub w/, and peak molecular weight, M/sub p/, as well as the derived ratio, anti M/sub w//anti M/sub n/, generally referred to as the molecular weight distribution index (MWD). The method employed the Waters high-speed gel permeation chromatograph (HSGPC) together with a Waters Model 440 uv detonator. Molecular weight data obtained had a standard deviation of approximately 5 percent.

Development of a lumped parametric model for scoping investigations of uncertainties in fast reactor probabilistic safety analysis. Progress report, October 10, 1974--October 10, 1975

The objective of the researh reported is to explore the possibility of the development of a novel reactor safety analysis methodology suitable for a parametric investigation of uncertainties in the progression of severe fast reactor accidents. The essential feature of this approach is a description of the reactor state by means of volumetric distributions (the distribution of volume of reactor materials, such as coolant, clad, and fuel, with temperature and in the case of fuel material, also with power). Stationary volumetric distributions are computed from detailed spatial temperature and power distributions of materials in the steady state reactor. Stationary volumetric distributions and other reactor physics quantities form the input for the reactor transient calculations in which the accident progression is described by the behavior of transient volumetric distributions. The report discusses the representation of spatial temperature distributions, the theory and calculation of stationary volumetric distributions, and includes examples of single subassembly and reactor distributions. The status of reactor neutronic code development and application is discussed and results are displayed.

Development program on pressurized fluidized-bed combustion. Quarterly report, July 1, 1975--September 30, 1975

A development program on pressurized fluidized-bed combustion is being carried out in a bench-scale pilot plant capable of operating at 10-atm pressure. The concept involves burning fuels such as coal in a fluidized bed of particulate lime additive that reacts with the sulfur compounds formed during combustion to reduce air pollution. Nitrogen oxide emissions are also reduced at the combustion temperatures used, which are lower than those used in a conventional coal combustor. The CaSO/sub 4/ produced in the combustor is regenerated to CaO that is recycled to the combustor for removal of sulfur compounds. Information is presented on the effects of coal and additive particle size on SO/sub 2/ and NO emissions, one-step regeneration of sulfated limestone, laboratory-scale experiments on the reaction of calcium sulfide with calcium sulfate, volatile constituents in the effluent gas from coal combustion, properties of a dolomite bed of a range of particle sizes and shapes at minimum fluidization, and the status of separation of the combustion system and regeneration system. Disposal of waste or excess high explosives. Progress report, October--December 1975. [Incineration; air pollution]

The pollution abatement study (Phase III) for the closed-pit, batch-type, full-scale test incinerator has begun. The study plan is discussed. Concentration levels of NO, NO/sub 2/, CO and particulates will be measured and the establishment of a base line, upon which to base the study, is nearly complete. Preliminary results for the particulate emissions from the incinerator indicate that the concentrations are within the maximum allowable levels set by the state of Texas.

El Dorado micellar-polymer project technical letter for December 1975 (open access)

El Dorado micellar-polymer project technical letter for December 1975

The primary field activity for December has been operation of the Injection Plant during the period of extreme freezing weather. Another prime concern has been the severe loss of injectivity experienced in the first two weeks of operation. A total of 12,170 barrels and 15,720 barrels has been injected in the Chesney and Hegberg patterns, respectively. This is a composite average of 50 barrels per day per well which is about one-half to one-third the desired injection rate. Chemical selection and support work has included the following areas: mobility flow tests, surfactant and polymer testing, injectivity and chemical sensitivity flow tests, oil displacement tests, and support work relating to the field laboratory and the low injectivity problems. Steady-state relative permeability data have been measured on two native-state core samples. A paper entitled ''Core Analysis Study for the El Dorado Micellar-Polymer Project'' was prepared for a Society of Petroleum Engineers meeting this spring. A final summary of directional permeability is being prepared. The summary is to be the basis for a second paper at the Society of Petroleum Engineers meeting in March, 1976. Bottom-hole pressures were measured in each monitoring well in December to help evaluate possible causes for the low …

Dose response curve for tumor induction with single and split doses of 10 MeV protons (open access)

Dose response curve for tumor induction with single and split doses of 10 MeV protons

The response of rat skin to proton irradiation shows a rapid form of recovery of both sublethal and suboncogenic injury and RBE values between 2 and 3. The combination of RBE values greater than one, and recovery indicates that while protons induce injury more efficiently per unit absorbed dose than electrons, there is still a reversible component to the injury process. Economic impact of corrosion and scaling problems in geothermal energy systems (open access)

Economic impact of corrosion and scaling problems in geothermal energy systems

Corrosion and scaling problems have a significant impact on geothermal plant economics. A power plant must amortize the capital investment over a 20-year period and achieve satisfactory operating efficiency to achieve financial success. Corrosion and scale incrustations have been encountered in all geothermal plants, and to various degrees, adversely affected plant life times and power output. Using published data this report analyzes known geothermal corrosion and scaling phenomena for significant cost impacts on plant design and operation. It has been necessary to speculate about causes and mechanisms in order to estimate impacts on conceptual geothermal plants. Silica is highly soluble in hot geothermal water and solubility decreases as water is cooled in a geothermal power plant. Calculations indicate as much as 30,000 tons/year could pass through a 100 MWe water cycle plant. The major cost impact will be on the reinjection well system where costs of 1 to 10 mills/kwhr of power produced could accrue to waste handling alone. On the other hand, steam cycle geothermal plants have a definite advantage in that significant silica problems will probably only occur in hot dry rock concepts, where steam above 250 C is produced. Calculation methods are given for estimating the required …

ECX and PEX rheology. Progress report, October--December 1975 (open access)

ECX and PEX rheology. Progress report, October--December 1975

The objectives of this project are: (1) to evaluate the capillary rheometer as a device to qualitatively measure the extrusion properties of extrusion cast and paste explosives; (2) to study and determine means to distinguish and characterize the rheological properties of different lots of ECX and PEX; and (3) to apply results from (1) and (2) to production loading operations involving ECX and PEX. The second objective (to study and determine means to distinguish and characterize rheological properties) of this project has been accomplished. Testing procedures were finalized, and general knowledge of the rheometer itself was gained. Three batches of 85/15 (wt. percent) RDX/Sylgard were tested in the Instron Capillary Rheometer. Each lot was statistically distinguishable from the other two lots. One lot exhibited a significantly lower apparent viscosity than the other two lots, which were statistically different from each other, but which were in fairly close agreement.

Effect of Prudhoe crude oil on carbon assimilation by planktonic algae in an arctic pond (open access)

Effect of Prudhoe crude oil on carbon assimilation by planktonic algae in an arctic pond

During the summer of 1975, 240ml/m of Prudhoe crude oil was spilled on an experimental coastal pond similar to those around Prudhoe Bay. Deviaton of algal production, algal biomass and species composition was compared to an adjacent control pond. Planktonic primary productivity was initially inhibited but recovered. Algal density did not deviate in the two ponds; however, the biomass and the species composition was changed, by the elimination of the Cryptophyte Rhodomonas minuta. The time course of the effects was related to the weathering and degradation of the oil. On these ponds the effects on the phytoplankton were not significantly different than those observed in 1970 after a controlled spill at 45 times the 1975 dose rate.

Effects of geothermal energy utilization on stream biota and water quality at The Geysers, California. Final report. [Big Sulphur, Little Sulphur, Squaw, and Pieta Creeks] (open access)

Effects of geothermal energy utilization on stream biota and water quality at The Geysers, California. Final report. [Big Sulphur, Little Sulphur, Squaw, and Pieta Creeks]

The discussion is presented under the following section headings: biological studies, including fish, insects, and microbiology; stream hydrology; stream water quality, including methods and results; the contribution of tributaries to Big Sulphur Creek, including methods, results, and tributary characterization; standing water at wellheads; steam condensate quality; accidental discharges; trout spawning bed quality; major conclusions; list of references; and appendices. It is concluded that present operational practices at Geysers geothermal field do not harm the biological resources in adjacent streams. The only effects of geothermal development observed during the study were related to operational accidents. (JGB)
