Cover-gas seals. FFTF-LMFBR seal-test program. Progress report, January-March 1975 (open access)

Cover-gas seals. FFTF-LMFBR seal-test program. Progress report, January-March 1975

The objectives of the general seal test program are to: (1) conduct static and dynamic tests to demonstrate or determine the mechanical performance of full-size (cross section) FFTF fuel transfer machine and reactor vessel head seals intended for use in a sodium vapor - inert gas environment, (2) demonstrate that these FFTF seals or new seal configurations provide acceptable fission product and cover gas retention capabilities at Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant (CRBRP) operating environmental conditions other than radiation, (3) develop improved seals and seal technology for the CRBRP to support the national objective to reduce all atmospheric contaminations to low levels, and (4) publish a Design Guide for reactor seals along with Ordering Data.

Critical Dimensions Of Aqueous Solutions Of U(37)O2F2 (open access)

Critical Dimensions Of Aqueous Solutions Of U(37)O2F2

The critical dimensions of a sphere of an aqueous solution of 37-wt%-{sup 235}U-enriched uranyl fluoride and of several unreflected and water-reflected cylinders at a number of chemical concentrations were determined experimentally. The critical uranium concentration in the unreflected sphere was 51.93 g/liter. The neutron multiplication factor of the sphere was calculated by the DSN transport code in the S{sub 4} approximation to be 1.0100; the relative fission-rate distribution along a diameter, also calculated by DSN, compared favorably with measurements. The results from the cylinders, although less detailed and less accurate, can be generalized for nuclear criticality safety guidance. The dimensions of equivalent spheres, infinite cylinders, and infinite slabs were estimated for selected chemical concentrations by equating bucklings.

Design and implementation of a demonstration supplementary control system. Second progress report, August 1, 1974--May 31, 1975

A Supplementary Control System (SCS) for maintaining acceptable ambient air quality has been designed. The controlled pollutant is sulfur dioxide and the SCS design includes a real-time meteorology and air quality monitoring network, periodic weather forecasting, air quality modeling and a probabilistic control strategy. Four coal burning power plants (4800 MW) in the complex terrain near Chestnut Ridge in western Pennsylvania are controlled by the design, and control actions include fuel switching, load shifting and stack gas temperature modification. The design has been implemented and is beginning its field testing period. Nine months of field data have been collected by the monitoring system and several programs have been developed to sort and analyze the data. The 24 hour standard is treatened most frequently and the background influence of Pittsburgh and Johnstown can be significant. (auth)

Determination of a definition of solar grade silicon. First quarterly report, 1 October--31 December 1975 (open access)

Determination of a definition of solar grade silicon. First quarterly report, 1 October--31 December 1975

The overall objective of this contract is to determine a definition of solar grade silicon by investigating the singular and the combined effect of the impurities usually found in metallurgical grade silicon on solar cell device performance. The impurity matrix was defined by Jet Propulsion Laboratory Technical Direction Memorandum. The initial work was focussed on standardizing our solar cell process and test procedure, growing baseline crystals, growing crystals ''contaminated'' with carbon, iron, nickel, zirconium, aluminum, and vanadium, solar blank preparation, and material characterization. The status of progress, an updated program plan, and the projected activities for the next phase of the contract are discussed. (auth)

Determination of chloride in TATB. Progress report, October--December 1975. [Potentiometric analysis] (open access)

Determination of chloride in TATB. Progress report, October--December 1975. [Potentiometric analysis]

To determine total chloride content in TATB, the sample was burned in a Parr Bomb, and the chlorides formed were titrated potentiometrically using silver nitrate. The electrode system is a chloride specific ion sensing element and a single junction reference. Results on seven test samples agree generally within 10 percent with previous analyses by the Development Division. Replicate analyses show precision of the method to be +-10 relative percent. Inorganic chloride is assayed by dissolving the TATB in concentrated sulfuric acid. The HCl, which is liberated, is swept into dilute base by a nitrogen sweep and analyzed potentiometrically with the chloride specific electrode. Results on three test samples agree within 5 percent with Development Division analyses, with a +-2 relative percent precision of analysis.
