Analysis of chloride in TATB by x-ray fluorescence. Progress report, October--December 1975
A procedure for the analysis of chlorides in TATB by x-ray fluorescence was investigated. The instrument was calibrated using the method of standard additions. NaCl was used as the additive. Eighteen TATB samples were prepared and analyzed yielding a standard deviation of less than 0.004 percent.

Analysis of LMFBR primary system response to an HCDA using an Eulerian computer code
Applications of an Eulerian code to predict the response of LMFBR containment and primary piping systems to hypothetical core disruptive accidents (HCDA), and to analyze sodium spillage problems, are described. The computer code is an expanded version of the ICECO code. Sample problems are presented for slug impact and sodium spillage, dynamics of the HCDA bubbles, and response of a piping loop. (JWR)

Analysis of Optically Excited Mercury Molecules
Report presenting new measurement techniques used to obtain potential curves, f-values, and kinetic behavior for Hg2. The Hg2 molecule is representative of a class of molecules which have dissociative ground states and bound excited states. It can therefore be used as a prototype of this class of molecules which are of interest as potential new laser candidates. Because of the non-bound ground state, standard absorption spectroscopic techniques cannot be used to obtain the necessary information about the excited states.

Analysis of radiation damage in fusion-simulation neutron spectra
Various parameters which are relevant to an understanding of radiation effects in metals have been evaluated utilizing available neutron spectrum information for several existing sources, e.g., EBRII, HFIR, and LAMPF, as well as the hypothetical spectrum at a fusion reactor first wall, and measured Li(d,n) spectra. Recoil energy distributions were calculated for several metals including Al, Cu, and Nb. The recoil energy range was divided into groups, and the fraction of recoils occurring in each energy group was compared with the fraction of the damage energy contributed by that group. From this comparison it was possible to conclude that the significant recoil range differs by about an order of magnitude between fission and fusion sources. The analysis further confirms that basic defect production characteristics depend upon the neutron spectrum, and that integral calculations of radiation-effect parameters do not provide a complete description of the dependence. This is equally true for comparisons between fusion-related spectra or fission-reactor spectra independently. Four recoil-dependent parameter functions which describe different aspects of radiation damage were used in the calculations. The relative effectiveness of neutron sources was found to depend upon the choice of parameter function. Fission-reactor spectra comparisons are relatively insensitive to the parameter functions …

Analytical solution of the toroidal constant tension solenoid
The coil shape is determined by requiring that the curvature of the flexible conductor be proportional to the distance from the toroidal axis. The resulting second order differential equation for the coil coordinates can be integrated once but for the second and final integration no closed form has been found and the integration has been done numerically. This solution of this differential equation is analytical in terms of an absolutely and uniformly convergent infinite series. The series converges quite rapidly and in practice ignoring all but the first five terms of the series introduces an error of less than 2 percent. (MOW)

Annual progress report, 1 January 1975--31 December 1975. [Information center on laboratory animals]
The Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources (ILAR) was founded in 1952 under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council (NAS-NRC). Located within the Division of Biological Sciences, Assembly of Life Sciences, ILAR serves as a coordinating agency to disseminate information, survey existing and required resources, establish standards and guidelines, promote education, hold conferences, and, generally, upgrade laboratory animal resources within the United States. Activities during 1976 are reported.
