Aspects of inhaled DTPA toxicity in the rat, hamster and beagle dog and treatment effectiveness for excorporation of Pu from the rat
After inhaling 1 to 4 HD (human dose equivalents, i.e., 1 g calcium trisodium N,N-bis (2-bis(carboxymethyl)amino) ethyl) glycinate/70 kg body weight) of Ca-DTPA rats and hamsters developed a transitory vesicular emphysema. This was not found in animals sacrificed later than 3 weeks after the last exposure. Dogs were anesthetised and administered Ca-DTPA aerosols via an intratracheal catheter for 30 min/day for 5 days. The average dose/exposure was 4 HD. One week following the last exposure, 3/4 treated dogs and 0/2 dogs exposed to saline aerosols showed enlargement and submucosal lymphoid follicles in the pyloric region of the stomach; this was not present in dogs sacrificed at 4, 8 or 18 weeks postexposure. Epithelial atypia in the alveolar lining was noted in 5/16 dogs inhaling Ca-DTPA and in 1/8 dogs exposed to saline aerosols, and may or may not be treatment-related. Rats receiving 1.2 $mu$Ci $sup 238$Pu(NO$sub 3$)$sub 4$ intramuscularly were treated promptly with 1.2 HD inhaled or intraperitoneally injected Ca-DTPA. The two methods of Ca-DTPA administration gave statistically identical Pu excorporation. Similar treatments initiated 8 months following the Pu injection also showed no effect of administration route. These experiments and implications for the safety and efficacy of inhaled Ca-DTPA as …

Assay of PBX 9501. Progress report, October--December 1975
An infrared spectrophotometric method is used for determining Estane in PBX 9501. In this method a 1 g sample of 9501 is extracted with 1,2-dichloroethane. The mixture is mechanically shaken for one hour, centrifuged, and an aliquot of the supernatant is transferred to a 0.50 mm NaCl cell. The IR spectrum at 1717 cm/sup -1/ is recorded, and the percent Estane calculated from the measured peak height. The HMX remaining from the dichloroethane extraction is determined gravimetrically, and the nitroplasticizer is calculated by difference.

Assessment and Study of Existing Concepts and Methods of Cryogenic Refrigeration for Superconducting Transmission Cables. Progress Report, 1 September 1975--31 October 1975. [Operation of Helium Liquefiers]
Progress made in a six task program on methods for cryogenic refrigeration for superconducting transmission cables is reported. The current report period included a review of equipment versus requirements, development of an optimization criteria, and evaluation of component reliability and efficiency. The results and findings of the helium refrigerator user visits, system and component manufacturers responses to questionnaires, telephone calls and visits, and the information obtained from a review of APCI standard N/sub 2/ plant experience are presented.

Assessment of Geothermal Resources of the United States--1975
This is the first of two significant assessments of the geological energy potential of the U.S. The second one is U.S.G.S. Circular 790. Systems analyzed include: Hydrothermal convection systems (with estimates of potential for many specific sites in the West), Igneous related systems (related to current or recent volcanism), Estimates of the conductive transport of heat in most areas of CONUS, Recovery of heat from molten igneous systems (magma), and Geopressured geothermal energy in the Gulf Coast area. The significance of this report is that it began to give policy makers a first handle on the quantities and qualities of geothermal energy in the ground in much of the U.S. Economics (costs and revenues) are not considered. Association of long-lived radioactivity with sediment along the Columbia River shoreline, islands, bottom and slough areas
Since deactivation of the last once-through cooling production reactor in January 1971, radioactivity associated with sediments or biota in the Columbia River attributable to past Hanford operations decreased to very low levels. Currently only a few long-lived radionuclides are measurable and generally due to the association of these radionuclides with sediments in the river. The data available from several different monitoring programs provide a preliminary description of the extent, concentration, and physical form of these radionuclides. Data are presented on $sup 137$Cs, $sup 60$Co, $sup 65$Zn, and $sup 152$Eu in sediments sampled in 1974. (CH)

Atelje II (Atelier II)
Access:
Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Lojze Lebič's Atelje II (Atelier II) for tape. The piece was composed in collaboration with Paul Pignon in the Radio Belgrade Electronic Studio in September 1975. It is made up of five sections, in which certain electroacoustic "instrumental" ideas are transformed through characteristic compositional procedures. The title has a twofold meaning: on one hand, it reveals the aims of the composer's research, considering that this was Lebič's first encounter with the electronic medium, and on the other, his expectations that the composition would be performed in the Concert Atelier cycle of the Society of Slovene composers. Atelier II was later expanded into Atelier III for magnetic tape and live violoncello performance.

Autoionizing states in highly ionized oxygen, fluorine and silicon
Autoionizing states in high Z 3-electron ions associated with core excited configurations of the type 1s2snl and 1s2pnl are reported. The electron decay-in-flight spectra of lithium-like oxygen, fluorine, and silicon ions are presented. Initial beam energies of 6.75-MeV oxygen and fluorine ions and 22.5- MeV silicon ions were used. Stripping and excitation were done by passing the beams through a thin carbon foil. The experimental technique is described. 4 figs, 1 table, 7 refs. (GHT)

Automated data system for emergency meteorological response
The Savannah River Plant (SRP) releases small amounts of radioactive nuclides to the atmosphere as a consequence of the production of radioisotopes. The potential for larger accidental releases to the atmosphere also exists, although the probability for most accidents is low. To provide for emergency meteorological response to accidental releases and to conduct research on the transport and diffusion of radioactive nuclides in the routine releases, a series of high-quality meteorological sensors have been located on towers in and about SRP. These towers are equipped with instrumentation to detect and record temperature and wind turbulence. Signals from the meterological sensors are brought by land-line to the SRL Weather Center-Analysis Laboratory (WC-AL). At the WC-AL, a Weather Information and Display (WIND) system has been installed. The WIND system consists of a minicomputer with graphical displays in the WC-AL and also in the emergency operating center (EOC) of SRP. In addition, data are available to the system from standard weather teletype services, which provide both routine surface weather observations and routine upper air wind and temperature observations for the southeastern United States. Should there be an accidental release to the atmosphere, available recorded data and computer codes would allow the calculation and …

Auxiliary/Master microprocessor CAMAC Crate Controller applications
The need for further sophistication of an already complex serial CAMAC control system at Fermilab led to the development of an Auxilary/Master CAMAC Crate Controller. The controller contains a Motorola 6800 microprocessor, 2K bytes of RAM, and 8K bytes of PROM memory. Bussed dataway lines are time shared with CAMAC signals to provide memory expansion and direct addressing of peripheral devices without the need of external cabling. The Auxiliary/Master Crate Controller (A/MCC) can function as either a Master, i.e., stand alone, crate controller or as an Auxiliary controller to Fermilab's Serial Crate Controller (SCC). Two modules, one single- and one double-width, make up an A/ MCC. The microprocessor has one nonmaskable and one maskable vectored interrupt. Time sharing the dataway between SCC programmed and block transfer generated dataway cycles and A/MCC operations still allows a 99 percent microprocessor CPU busy time. Since the conception of the A/MCC, there has been an increasing number of control system-related projects proposed which would not have been possible or would have been very difficult to implement without such a device. The first such application now in use at Fermilab is a stand-alone control system for a mass spectrometer experiment in the Main Ring Internal …
