Artificial geothermal reservoirs in hot volcanic rock (open access)

Artificial geothermal reservoirs in hot volcanic rock

S>Some recent results from the Los Alamos program in which hydraulic fracturing is used for the recovery of geothermal energy are discussed. The location is about 4 kilometers west and south of the ring fault of the enormous Jemez Caldera in the northcentral part of New Mexico. It is shown that geothermal energy may be extracted from hot rock that does not contain circulating hot water or steam and is relatively impermeable. A fluid is pumped at high pressure into an isolated section of a wellbore. If the well is cased the pipe in this pressurized region is perforated as it is in the petroleum industry, so that the pressure may be applied to the rock, cracking it. A second well is drilled a few hundred feet away from the first. Cold water is injected through the first pipe, circulates through the crack, and hot water returns to the surface through the second pipe. Results are described and circumstances are discussed under which artiflcial geothermal reservoirs might be created in the basaltic rock of Hawaii. (MCW)

Imagery from Infrared Scanning of the East and Southwest Rift Zones of Kilauea and the Lower Portion of the Southwest Rift Zone of Mauna Loa, Island of Hawaii (open access)

Imagery from Infrared Scanning of the East and Southwest Rift Zones of Kilauea and the Lower Portion of the Southwest Rift Zone of Mauna Loa, Island of Hawaii

From July 31 through August 4, 1973 night time flights for obtaining infrared imagery along the east and southwest rift zones of Kilauea and the southwest rift zone of Mauna Loa were undertaken on the island of Hawaii. Flights were also made on Hualalai and Kohala volcanoes but because of inconclusive results, they are not included in this report. Ground control stations had been established during daylight hours several days prior to starting the flight program. Students stationed at the ground central points guided the aircraft on predetermined flight paths by the use of directional lights which were visible to the plane's navigator. Results of the infrared scanning program are considered to be very successful. Events leading up to the final imagery on 8 x 10 color prints are discussed. The sum of $23,900 was designated by the NSF to be expended on aerial photogeologic work on the Hawaii Geothermal Project. Infrared scanning was the only aerial technique employed in this phase.

Missing Mass Spectra from p p ---> p X from 9-GeV/c to 300-GeV/c (open access)

Missing Mass Spectra from p p ---> p X from 9-GeV/c to 300-GeV/c

Missing mass spectra were obtained by measuring recoil protons from the reaction p + p {yields} p + X in the Jacobian peak region at |t| = 0.175 and 0.25 (GeV/c){sup 2}. The incident momentum range from 9 to 300 GeV/c was covered continuously by taking data during the acceleration ramp of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory machine. Our missing mass range varied from 1.5 to 8.5 GeV and we observed the well known N*(1688) and N*(2l90) but no significant structures at higher mass.

MAXIMUM HUMIDITY INDICATOR (open access)

MAXIMUM HUMIDITY INDICATOR

Moisture-sensitive systems to measure and indicate the maximum level of humidity exposure are discussed. A chemical indicator utilizing deliquescent salts and water-soluble dyes provides an irreversible color change at discrete levels of relative humidity. To provide indication of the time at which the exposure occurs, a circuit employing a resistive-type sensor was developed. A small, commercially available sensor is used in a portable probe to detect humidity leaks into controlled areas.

Proton-Induced L-shell X-Rays of Pr, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Dy (open access)

Proton-Induced L-shell X-Rays of Pr, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Dy

Characteristic L-shell x rays of the five rare earths Pr, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Dy were studied in this work. The x rays were produced by ionization from 0.3 to 2.0 MeV protons from the 2.0 MV Van de Graaff at North Texas State University. Total L-shell ionization and x-ray production cross sections were measured for Sm and compared to the BEA, CBEA and PWBA theories. Total L-shell ionization cross sections were measured for Pr, Eu, Gd, and Dy and compared to the BEA, CBEA, and PWBA. The CBEA and PWBA fit the samarium data well for both ionization and x-ray production cross sections. The BEA was generally 40 per cent lower than the data. The CBEA and the PWBA also fit the ionization cross section data for Pr, Eu, Gd and Dy, while the BEA was generally 40 per cent lower than the data.
