Sonata 1972 (open access)

Sonata 1972

A composition in three movements for piano, the duration of which is approximately seven minutes and thirty seconds. The tonal organization employs quickly changing tonal centers. Linear aspects are of more structural importance than vertical sonorities. Frequent changes of meter, syncopation, and ostinato figurations are utilized in each movement. Primarily, a two-voiced texture is employed to effect a transparent quality of sound. A detailed thematic and formal analysis of each movement is included in the "Discussion and Analysis".

A Transcription and Translation of Musica Dalla Parodie d'Alceste by Carlos d'Ordoñez

Parody may be defined as a humorous or sarcastic imitation of a serious piece of literature. It appears, following this interpretation, that Carlos Ordoñez composed his marionette opera, Musica Dalla Parodie d'Alceste as a parody on Gluck's Alceste. A microfilm of the original manuscript of Ordoñez was procured from the National Szecheny Library in Budapest, the possessor of the only copy of the work.

Synergism (open access)

Synergism

Synergism is an art presentation designed to use multimedia concepts to heighten audience involvement in the work. Although primarily sound oriented, its skeletal structure is literary. The music expands upon the text to communicate the inexplicable or irrational element of its meaning to those faculties which determine emotional response. This process is aided by a modicum of environmental control achieved through stage lighting effects.

Identification of Glycine as the Factor in Peptone Which Induces Pleomorphism in Azotobacter Vinelandii (open access)

Identification of Glycine as the Factor in Peptone Which Induces Pleomorphism in Azotobacter Vinelandii

The rigid peptidoglycan layer of the cell wall is responsible for maintaining the structural integrity of bacteria. Antibiotics such as penicillin exert their anti-bacterial effect by inhibiting synthesis of peptodoglycan, and enzymes such as lysozyme destroy cell integrity by hydrolyzing specific bonds in the interior of this macromolecule. Defective cells can no longer withstand the high turgor pressure within the cell because they are no longer protected by a rigid wall and tend to become fragile and spherical or irregular in shape. While all bacteria are pleomorphic under certain conditions which do not normally affect other bacteria. This is exemplified by the pleomorphic growth of Azotobacter in nutrient agar or peptone-containing medium. The purpose of this investigation was to study the nature of peptone-induced pleomorphism of Azotobacter. The first phase of study dealt with the effects of poptone on the growth and morphology of A. vinelandii. Many diverse froms were observed in peptone-containing media, but it was shown that all cell types were related to the "fungoid" family of pleomorphic cells. Although Azotobacter failed to accumulate detectable levels of cell-wall precursors in response to glycine treatment, it was shown that glycine acted only on metabolically active cells. In addition, incorporation …

Linkage Relationships of Greenbug Resistance in Barley, Hordeum Vulgare L.

The linkage relationship and arm location of the gene for greenbug resistance in the variety Will was determined by using primary trisonomics and tertiary trisomic homozygous translocations. The gene for greenbug resistance was found to be on linkage group 1 by using primary trisonomics. The gene was located on the cetromere segment of the Tl-6a translocation by using a tertiary trismoic homozygous for greenbug resistance. The data further substantiates the feasibility of using trisomics in placing genes on proper linkage groups.

Predictors, Correlates, and Consequences of Job Satisfaction in a University Library

The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of determining the predictors, correlates, and consequences of job satisfaction in a university library. A managerial model was constructed for the purpose of providing an overall framework of analysis. It was hypothesized, in the managerial model, that organizational effectiveness in any organization is linked closely to the concepts of job satisfaction and employee satisfactoriness. These two concepts, in turn, are closely related to managerial behavior.

Interior Lighting Effects Inspired by Nature (open access)

Interior Lighting Effects Inspired by Nature

Developed in the study is the thesis that the lighting effects about us in nature can be adapted by the designer for use in interior environments. Because of an overemphasis in lighting practice on engineering techniques required in the design of luminous environments, there has been a neglect of much of the aesthetic requirements of such environments. While interior designers, as artists, may be sensitive to the aesthetic qualities of lighting, many of them have felt insecure in designing in a medium which can be very technical from an engineering standpoint; hence, many have defaulted in shaping or designing a very important segment of man's environment. In light of this situation, the objective of the study is to provide the designer with tools, both aesthetic and technical, with which to communicate with the engineer in achieving a luminous environment that not only is a functional environment for optimal seeing, but is an art experience as well. Lighting as an art experience has its own set of design principles: these are defined in this study as silhouette, focus, uniformity, variety, and glitter. They are common to lighting effects as found in nature and as found in the artificial environments of building …

The Rhetorical Structure of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (open access)

The Rhetorical Structure of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee

The purpose of this study is to analyze the overall rhetorical structure of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee during 1960-1968. The criteria used in this study were adapted from: Joseph R. Gusfield, "Protest, Reform, and Revolt - A Reader in Social Movements;" Dan F. Hahn and Ruth Gonchar, "Studying in Social Movements: A Rhetorical Methodology;" Kurt Lang and Gladys Lang, "Collective Dynamics;" Leland M. Griffin, "The Rhetoric of Historical Movements;" Herbert W. Simons, "Requirements, Problems, and Strategies: A Theory of Persuasion for Social Movements." Gusfield's definition of a movement as "socially shared activities and beliefs directed toward the demand for change in some aspect of the social order" is utilized. To examine the rhetorical structure, it is necessary to divest it from the complex structural aspects of a movement. Simons' theory of the "grand flow" of a movement's persuasion guided this study. The rhetorical requirements of a movement are introduced in Chapter I. The requirements tend to fall into the following sub-categories: the ideology, the strategy, the goals, the membership, and the leadership. Chapter II is devoted to the setting during which the movement was founded. It includes a brief history of social unrest in civil rights struggles in the …

Three Songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn by Gustav Mahler (open access)

Three Songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn by Gustav Mahler

The value of the type of musical analysis presented in this study is based on the assumption that the more thorough an understanding the performer has of his repertoire, of both musical and non-musical elements, the more authentic the performance will be. A knowledge of the wishes of the composer and of the historical period, added to an analysis of poetry, melodic contour, harmony, rhythm, accompaniment, and texture, provides the performer with the necessary background to form his interpretation of a song. The interpretation of "Wo die schonen Trompeten blasen" depends upon an accurate execution of the various rhythmic patterns in both the vocal line and the accompaniment. The sometimes opposing rhythms (two against three) between the voice and accompaniment should be carefully observed. Another important interpretive aspect is the portrayal of both characters in the poem (the soldier and his sweetheart). Character differentiation is primarily achieved through the singer's vocal color, intensity, and general deportment. The singer must thoroughly understand the poetry and have formed a definite personality for each character. In "Das irdische Leben" the individuality of each character in the poem is even more essential. The three characters are musically differentiated by the three individual patterns of …

Use of the Mass Communication Media by Governor John B. Connally, Jr. (open access)

Use of the Mass Communication Media by Governor John B. Connally, Jr.

Governor John B. Connally Jr., who served as chief executive of the State of Texas from 1963.to 1969, made extensive use of the mass communication media to further both his programs and his own political fortune. It is the purpose of this study to examine the history of Connally's use of the media, to evaluate the degree of success he achieved in the use of the media, and to present evidence of how he was able to achieve success in the use of the media. The study was done in three phases. In the first phase, microfilm files of two newspapers, the Dallas News and the Houston Chronicle, were studied in detail for the years 1962 through 1968. Clipping files of the Associated Press in Austin and the Dallas Times Herald also were studied for the years in question. Also, the New York Times Index was examined for references to Connally during these years. Such references were then checked on microfilm files of the Times. In the second phase, key members of Connally's staff for those years and key members of the capitol press corps in Austin were interviewed. As a third step, a questionnaire was mailed to 25 selected …
