Length changes in FTR prototypic cladding irradiated in EBR-II to 1 x 10/sup 22/ N/CM/sup 2/, E > 0. 1 MeV (PIN B-65)(RM-24) (open access)

Length changes in FTR prototypic cladding irradiated in EBR-II to 1 x 10/sup 22/ N/CM/sup 2/, E > 0. 1 MeV (PIN B-65)(RM-24)

Swelling in prototypic FTR cladding and duct specimens is being determined from a series of three irradiations designed to cover a range of temperatures approximately 800 to 1500/sup 0/F and peak fluences of approximately 1 x 10/sup 22/, 6 x 10/sup 22/, and 1 x 10/sup 23/ n/cm/sup 2/. The length change measurements for the low fluence irradiation have been completed and are summarized in this report. No swelling, only shrinkage, was found in the 20 percent cold worked Type 316 stainless steel cladding specimens. This shrinkage is of the same magnitude and has the same temperature dependency as unirradiated, control samples. Annealed specimens did swell slightly. Details of the experiment and analysis are given.

Sampling and analyzing tritium release from the Purex stack (open access)

Sampling and analyzing tritium release from the Purex stack

A request was made by Purex Processing to sample analyze the tritium released from the Purex k. The analyses show that over 90 percent he emit-ted tritium is in either the ammoniacal or elemental form, probably elemental. The rate of emission varies widely depending on the point in progress of the dissolution. The Purex stack air was sampled for tritium in the 293-A Building by breaking the iodine monitor sampling line (Figure 1).

The Direct Production of Electron Pairs in Nuclear Emulsion by 100 and 200 GeV Protons (open access)

The Direct Production of Electron Pairs in Nuclear Emulsion by 100 and 200 GeV Protons

It is proposed to study the direct production of electron pairs produced when a high energy proton interacts with the Coulomb field of a nucleus. This process occurs at fourth order in quantum electrodynamics. This phenomena, called trident production when the incident particle is an electron, is characterized by a single incident primary track and three emerging tracks. Accelerator experiments on direct pair production by protons have not been previously reported, due to the small cross-sections at energies less than 100 GeV. However, at an energy of 100 GeV the cross-section for the direct creation of electron pairs by protons in emulsion is about 10{sup -25}cm{sup 2}.

Physics of gas cooled reactors (open access)

Physics of gas cooled reactors

From meeting on new developments in reactor physics and shieiding calculations; Lake Kiamesha, New York, USA (12 Sep The temperature coefficient of the HTOR is composed of a strong negative Doppler coefficient and a positive moderator coefficient, the net effect being about -10 x 10/sup -5// deg C at operating temperature. the positive moderator coefficient is a result of the absence of significant density coefficients and the nuclear characteristics of U- 233. In addition, selected iission products, principally Xe-135, contribute positive components to the temperature coefficient. Current estimates of the value of the temperature coefficient in the HTGR are presented along with recent experimental data pertinent to the subject. (11 references) (auth)

Compilation and Correlation of Experimental, Hypersonic, Stagnation Point Convective Heating Rates (open access)

Compilation and Correlation of Experimental, Hypersonic, Stagnation Point Convective Heating Rates

Experimental shock-tube data for the aerodynamic heating at the stagnation point on spherical bodies at superorbital and suborbital flight velocities (U/sub/0) have been compiled from a number of sources and compared to theoretical predictions. It was found that the empirical correlation given by Detra, Kemp and Riddell is remarkably close to a least-squares fit of the data. It is therefore recommended that their correlation be used for continuum flow theoretical predictions of the laminar hypersonic convective stagnation-point heating rate to spherical bodies in the region U/sub/0 - 6000 to 58,000 ft/sec.

Biomedical engineering support. Annual report (open access)

Biomedical engineering support. Annual report

The purpose of this research was to provide the artificial heart design information necessary for the proper development of an implantable nuclear power supply for the artificial heart. A Kwan-Gett hemispherical artificial heant made of silicone rubber was attached to a mock circulation instrumented with pressure, volume and fiow transducers and measurements made of power input to the artificial heant at various locations, source of power losses and efficiencies of the artificial heart under a variety of pumping conditions, volumetric efficiency, pressure required to move the diaphragm of the artificial heat, required motion of the heant diaphragm and pumping characteristics of the antificial heant. The in vitro measurements have been verified by in vivo experiments in calves. The preliminary design of a pumping chamber for the nuclear powered heart has been completed. (auth)

SPINFIN: A computer program for trajectory simulation of flight vehicles with semi-passive roll control systems

This report presents the trajectory computer program, SPINFIN. The program has been in use at Sandia Laboratories, Livermore, for flight simulation of those reentry vehicles which utilize a class of semi-passive fin roll-control systems. As such, it has served as an important design tool for some time. The report includes a presentation of the prominent features of the mathematical model which describes the vehicle aero-, flight-, and control-system dynamics. Additionally, detailed descriptions of the program input and output are provided as a user`s guide.
