[Letter from Representative George Mahon to T. N. Carswell - July 26, 1972] (open access)

[Letter from Representative George Mahon to T. N. Carswell - July 26, 1972]

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from George Mahon, House of Representatives, Washington, D. C., dated July 26, 1972. Mahon acknowledges his receipt of the letter from Carswell regarding food stamps for striking workers. Mahon defends his stance on the issue, advises that he attached the speech he made regarding the food stamp amendment, and states, "I hardly had any alternative but to support the bill as drafted" for strategy and parliamentary reasons. He advises that he caved on the food stamps for strikers to save West Texas agriculture and to maintain his strength as Chairman of the Committee. He states that he hesitated writing such a long letter but felt that Carswell would want to understand some of the complexities involved in his work.

Caption: "Three months ahead of its schedule completion date, the Myriad Convention Center was the scene Wdnesday of its first public event - the monthly meeting of the Major Industry Beautifaction Council of Oklahoma City Beautiful. Principal speaker James B. White, director of the Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority (OCCURA), presented a verbal tour of the proposed Myriad Gardens complex to 50 members and guests who sweltered without benefit of the center's 2,800-ton air conditiong system. Calling the gardens "a way of providing a natural environment" with the city, White said the 11-acre project directly west of the convention center could become more than the focal point of the downtown business district, "but a regional attraction of its own." "We're right on the verge of realizing a drea that goes back more than a decade," White said before praising the late Oklahoma Sen. Robert S. Kerr, who was among the first to express a concern for the problems faced by central city cores....Don Kaspereit, OCCURA planning director, followed White with a slide presentation."
