This study is concerned with an analysis of twenty paintings by Western European artists from the thirty-five-item segment of the Anthony Denney Collection on permanent loan to the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. The paintings were considered separately in a two phase visual and verbal analysis accompanied by visual diagrams. Phase one described the primary visual qualities of each painting through examination of the art elements and principles. Phase two was a verbal description of each painting. The purpose of this investigation is to provide an analysis format suitable for abstract and non-objective works of art.

The purpose of this study was to attempt to observe and quantify some of the effects of an experiential interpersonal communication training program on the individuals involved. The program studied was Speech 360, a laboratory communication course offered at North Texas State University. The design of the study involved three basic student groups -- a.) the fall 1970 Speech 360 students; b.) the Spring 1971 Speech 360 students; and c.) a control group of students similar to those in the course, but who were not involved in the training program.

Developed in the study is the thesis that the lighting effects about us in nature can be adapted by the designer for use in interior environments. Because of an overemphasis in lighting practice on engineering techniques required in the design of luminous environments, there has been a neglect of much of the aesthetic requirements of such environments. While interior designers, as artists, may be sensitive to the aesthetic qualities of lighting, many of them have felt insecure in designing in a medium which can be very technical from an engineering standpoint; hence, many have defaulted in shaping or designing a very important segment of man's environment. In light of this situation, the objective of the study is to provide the designer with tools, both aesthetic and technical, with which to communicate with the engineer in achieving a luminous environment that not only is a functional environment for optimal seeing, but is an art experience as well. The purpose of this study is to analyze the overall rhetorical structure of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee during 1960-1968. The criteria used in this study were adapted from: Joseph R. Gusfield, "Protest, Reform, and Revolt - A Reader in Social Movements;" Dan F. Hahn and Ruth Gonchar, "Studying in Social Movements: A Rhetorical Methodology;" Kurt Lang and Gladys Lang, "Collective Dynamics;" Leland M. Griffin, "The Rhetoric of Historical Movements;" Herbert W. Simons, "Requirements, Problems, and Strategies: A Theory of Persuasion for Social Movements." Gusfield's definition of a movement as "socially shared activities and beliefs directed toward the demand for change in some aspect of the social order" is utilized. To examine the rhetorical structure, it is necessary to divest it from the complex structural aspects of a movement. Simons' theory of the "grand flow" of a movement's persuasion guided this study. The rhetorical requirements of a movement are introduced in Chapter I. The requirements tend to fall into the following sub-categories: the ideology, the strategy, the goals, the membership, and the leadership. The value of the type of musical analysis presented in this study is based on the assumption that the more thorough an understanding the performer has of his repertoire, of both musical and non-musical elements, the more authentic the performance will be. A knowledge of the wishes of the composer and of the historical period, added to an analysis of poetry, melodic contour, harmony, rhythm, accompaniment, and texture, provides the performer with the necessary background to form his interpretation of a song. The interpretation of "Wo die schonen Trompeten blasen" depends upon an accurate execution of the various rhythmic patterns in both the vocal line and the accompaniment. The sometimes opposing rhythms (two against three) between the voice and accompaniment should be carefully observed. Another important interpretive aspect is the portrayal of both characters in the poem (the soldier and his sweetheart). Character differentiation is primarily achieved through the singer's vocal color, intensity, and general deportment. The singer must thoroughly understand the poetry and have formed a definite personality for each character. Governor John B. Connally Jr., who served as chief executive of the State of Texas from 1963.to 1969, made extensive use of the mass communication media to further both his programs and his own political fortune. It is the purpose of this study to examine the history of Connally's use of the media, to evaluate the degree of success he achieved in the use of the media, and to present evidence of how he was able to achieve success in the use of the media. The study was done in three phases. In the first phase, microfilm files of two newspapers, the Dallas News and the Houston Chronicle, were studied in detail for the years 1962 through 1968. Clipping files of the Associated Press in Austin and the Dallas Times Herald also were studied for the years in question. Also, the New York Times Index was examined for references to Connally during these years. Such references were then checked on microfilm files of the Times. In the second phase, key members of Connally's staff for those years and key members of the capitol press corps in Austin were interviewed. "This thesis analyzes the impact of the Mexican-American voters in south Texas on the 1960 presidential election. During that election year, this ethnic minority was strong enough to merit direct appeals from the Democratic presidential candidate, and subsequently, allowed to conduct a unique campaign divorced from the direct control of the conservative state Democratic machinery...The study of the Mexican-American political behavior in 1960 proceeds in three stages. The first chapter examines the political factionalism within the state Democratic Party suggest the conservative solution to the problem of liberal splinter groups, and evaluates Lyndon Johnson's contribution to the Democratic ticket in south Texas. Chapter II probes into the importance of imagery and indentity in politics, challenges the possibility of a religiously-based bloc vote in south Texas, but postulates the probability of a sub-conscious religious identification with the Democratic candidate. The last chapter describes the Valley 'Viva Kennedy' clubs, their origin, organization, activities, and contributions. To substantiate the author's hypothesis, oral interviews, club reports, personal files, letters, and contemporary newspapers were extensively used."-- leaf 1.

Sergei Prokofiev experimented with styles which shocked the public because his ideas were far ahead of his time. In the 1930's, the Soviet composer turned to a neoclassical style. His Sonata, Opus 119, for violoncello and piano, is a product of this final period of composition. The purpose of this study is to determine the stylistic characteristics of this sonata. This study includes a detailed description of the compositional techniques Prokofiev used in this work. These techniques are categorized according to the basic stylistic elements. The sources of data are comprised of the score of Prokofiev's Sonata, Opus 119, as well as books on twentieth-century music and on Prokofiev as a man and as a composer. The score was used for purposes of analysis.

The American Dream promised success to Americans in the nineteenth century. This study analyzes the possibilities for average individuals to succeed in rapidly growing Dallas, Texas from 1880 to 1910. Success is measured in terms of occupational, property, and geographical mobility. Available materials dealing with average persons from Dallas: tax rolls, city directories, and the manuscript census for 1880 are evaluated, The focus of this study is primarily on the black population, but for comparison whites and immigrants were also studied. A sample of 216 whites, 212 immigrants, 210 blacks, and 81 mulattoes was randomly drawn from the 1880 census schedules. These men were traced through directories and tax rolls for the period from 1880 to 1910. Information was also tabulated on the female heads of household in Dallas in 1880.

This study was conducted to ascertain whether or not the opportunities for developing competencies in descriptive geometry needed by draftsmen in the Dallas -Fort Worth area are being provided in Texas junior colleges. Findings concerning the knowledge, skills, and equipment associated with descriptive geometry as it is presented in Texas junior colleges were compared with competencies in descriptive geometry that representatives of industry believe are important for successful draftsmen in companies in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The purpose of the study is to compile information which will be of use to school officials and teachers in developing courses of study that will enable students to acquire the knowledge and skills needed for success in industry.

This study is a translation of and commentary on an eighteenth-century treatise written by Juan Miguel Urtasun de Yrarraga. Its purpose is to contribute to the field of knowledge of eighteenth-century Spanish materials, making an original work of that era accessible to the reader unfamiliar with the Spanish language.

The problem of this study is to determine a profile of the typical industrial arts major at North Texas State University, based on scores made on the American College Testing Program Battery, and to compare this profile with profiles of four other local subgroups. ACT scores representing nine categories of student information were analyzed from a total sampling of 286 North Texas State University students of the Industrial Arts Department, School of Business Administration, School of Education, and College of Arts and Sciences. Data were from tests administered during regular ACT testing sessions in 1966-67.

The remedial effects of specific techniques outlined by the Frostig Developmental Test of Visual Perception were studied in two groups of children diagnosed as dyslexic: a treatment group of thirty, and a control group of thirty who were not available for immediate treatment. Initial testing indicated that all children utilized in the study were dyslexic, and after a treatment period of three months, post-testing was administered to both groups.
