Geothermal energy: Geology, exploration, and developments. Part I (open access)

Geothermal energy: Geology, exploration, and developments. Part I

Geology, exploration, and initial developments of significant geothermal areas of the world are summarized in this report which is divided into two parts. Part 1 is a review of the geological and explorational aspects of geothermal energy development; areas of potential development in the Western United States are also discussed. The most favorable geological environment for exploration and development of geothermal steam is characterized by recent normal faulting, volcanism, and high heat flow. Successful exploration for steam consists of coordinated multidisciplinary application of geological, geophysical, and geochemical knowledge and techniques. These are reviewed. California leads in known geothermal reserves and is followed by Nevada, Oregon, and New Mexico. Specific prospective areas in these 11 Western States are described.

Geothermal Resource Investigations: Imperial Valley, California. Site location report, deep geothermal test well (open access)

Geothermal Resource Investigations: Imperial Valley, California. Site location report, deep geothermal test well

Data for use in siting a deep geothermal test well in the East Mesa area of Imperial County, California are summarized. The data relate to a geothermal anomaly known as the Mesa anomaly. It is concluded that the thermal feature forming the Mesa anomaly is a manifestation of a sizable convective hydrothermal system embracing an area of about 19 square miles and a considerable volume of saturated sediment in the Salton trough. The upper surface of the thermal feature between depths of 200 and 1,000 feet is irregular being shaped somewhat by ground-water movement. The area of greatest apparent heat flow is in SE/sup 1///sub 4/ of Sec. 6, T. 16 S., R. 17 E., and has a diameter of about /sup 1///sub 2/ mile. This area is an attractive drill site. The convective hydrothermal system regulating heat flow to the shallow subsurface is not known in detail but iso-resistivity maps suggest it exerts direct influence on near surface water temperature and salinity over an area of some 19 square miles. The mineral concentration of the ground water in this system will range from a minimum of about 3000 ppM to a probable maximum of about 30,000 ppM.

The Effects of Two Types of Group Counseling Procedures with Junior College Students (open access)

The Effects of Two Types of Group Counseling Procedures with Junior College Students

The problem with which this investigation was concerned was to measure personal adjustment, emotional adjustment, home adjustment, and self-concept changes that took place in junior college students as a result of one-counselor group counseling and male-and-female co-counselor group counseling. The rationale for male-and-female co-counselor group counseling relied on the formation of a simulated family in which individuals could socialize their feelings.

The Influence of a Return of Native Grasslands upon the Ecology and Distribution of Small Rodents in Big Bend National Park (open access)

The Influence of a Return of Native Grasslands upon the Ecology and Distribution of Small Rodents in Big Bend National Park

In the southwestern United States there is a delicate balance between the existing grasslands and the rodent fauna. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of secondary succession of native grasslands upon the ecology and distribution of small rodents. Two methods of determining the rodent species were plot quadrates and trap lines using Sherman live traps.

The Effect of Supplementary Materials upon Academic Achievement in and Attitude toward Mathematics among Eighth Grade Students (open access)

The Effect of Supplementary Materials upon Academic Achievement in and Attitude toward Mathematics among Eighth Grade Students

The problem of the study was to examine the effectiveness of using supplementary materials in the teaching of eighth grade mathematics. The study considered the effect that supplementary materials had on students in terms of the following variables--attitude toward mathematics, mathematical concepts, problem solving ability, understanding common fractions, computation of common fractions, decimal fractions and per cent, concepts of numbers and numerals (number system and operations), and concepts of numbers and numerals (decimal place value).
