Detonation sphere. Quarterly report, April--June, 1971 (open access)

Detonation sphere. Quarterly report, April--June, 1971

The final HE test for the fiscal year was conducted in the 4-foot detonation sphere in May. A 200 g charge of 2-4-6 trinitrotoluene (1 1/2-inch diameter x 4 1/2-inch long) was initiated. On initiation, the TNT charge failed to detonate but instead partial deflagration of the HE took place. The ensuing pressure rise (54 torr vs. {approximately} 120 torr expected) implied a partial detonation; nevertheless, sampling and evaluation at the detonation products was continued. After removal of the products, the sphere was opened for inspection. The interior of the sphere was covered with a heavy carbon deposit adhering to a viscous film. Closer observation revealed granules of TNT embedded in the residual layer and also smeared on the surfaces of the involved hardware. Scrubbing with soap and water had no effect on the film; consequently, all the contamination was removed with acetone. Of the related hardware, only the copper cylinder suffered any damage. The cylinder was not fragmented; however, the internal diameter (1 1/2-inch) was found to have been enlarged by {le} 0.450 inch. The partitioned stainless steel tube suffered no distortion although the sections were propelled against the sphere wall. The data obtained for this test along with …

Development of PEX explosives: Solid-liquid phase diagrams of energetic mixes. Quarterly report, July--September, 1971

The solid-liquid phase diagrams of various binary mixtures of FEFO, BDNPA, EDNP and BDNPF are being studied. Temperatures at which a 0.025-inch probe penetrated the samples were measured. It appears that the samples had not crystallized but solidified into a glass.

Electro-optical system for studies of transient events. Quarterly report, October--December, 1971

An electro-optical system assembled for studies of self-luminous events is described. The system, primarily designed to support LLL and SLA investigations of flyer and exploding wire assemblies, provides time-correlated optical and electrical observations over the functional life of the two self-luminous assemblies.

Electromagnetic stress and velocity gages. Quarterly report July--September, 1971

The installation of a new electromagnet to be used with the stress and velocity gages is discussed. The results obtained from a new gage designed to eliminate the anomalous signals reported last quarter are given. Using this gage, a comparison of the waveforms from the XMC 2361 driver and the MC 2453 driver subassembly was made; the difference between the two, as determined by the velocity gage, is negligible. Also reported are the results of an unsuccessful attempt to use the velocity gage to pick up a timing signal from the XMC 2361 flyer plate.

He formulation. [Quarterly report], July--September 1971

Four batches of experimental PETN have been made for incorporation into LX-13 (Extex). A control batch was reprecipitated in the conventional manner (shock reprecipitation from acetone into violently agitated water) while three batches were made in the Micronizer: Two of these were treated with MRL 22A.with one of the treated batches being heat stabilized for 8 hours at 116 C. Two 500-pound batches of RX-04-EC (4% Viton A) were made to supply material for the special studies of the effects of deviations in the composition of LX-10 type explosive. An attempt was made to mold a skid test part from ECX. Inadequate curing of the binder made mold stripping difficult.

HE formulation. Quarterly report, October--December, 1971

A freeze drying process has been developed which alleviates the caking of high surface area HE powders upon drying and yields a light fluffy textured powder. Three batches of high surface area PETN treated with a surface active agent and two batches of high surface area (Micronizer) RDX have been freeze dried. The RDX powder had a low bulk density of about 0.25 g/cc. Batch sizes ranging from 2 to 10 pounds or more can be easily processed. Samples of the RDX, along with Micronized PETN (surface agent treated and heat stabilized, and untreated), Extex PETN made by a semi-continuous process, and appropriate control samples were each made into 80/20 Sylgard compositions and hand-loaded into ``Sunburst`` assemblies. Some of these assemblies were subjected to 100 C for 30 hours and 300 hours. All of the samples loaded with Micronized PETN and Extex PETN fired satisfactorily, burning to 6-mil thickness of the tapered rays. The RDX fired well also, burning to {approximately} 20-mil thickness of the rays. All the high surface area materials were, of course, very difficult to process at the 20% loading of Sylgard. Several of these samples were also subjected to a detonation velocity test in varying diameter …

HE friction sensitivity. Oblique impact sensitivity of explosives (the skid test). Quarterly report, April--June, 1971

Oblique impact tests were performed on both artificially aged and unaged LX-09-0. Oblique impact, instrumented vertical drops, and friction tests were performed on RX-25-AA. An extensive oblique impact and instrumented vertical drop test series was performed using three compositional variations of LX-10-0.

Implementation of detonation electric effects. [Quarterly report], January--March 1971

Detonation electric effect measurement was applied to a stack of PMMA discs on the output of an explosive PWL to resolve some anomalies previously observed in the arrival times of a shock wave as it passes through the various interfaces. A brief description of the experiments and some comments on the results are included.

An investigation of the feasibility of building a harbor on the West coast of South America using explosive power of nuclear weapons, a preliminary report (open access)

An investigation of the feasibility of building a harbor on the West coast of South America using explosive power of nuclear weapons, a preliminary report

There is an interest in discovering the various peace time uses of nuclear explosives. One of the proposals is the building of harbors. There are several ports along the west coast of South America where lighterage is necessary. This implies a need for expanded harbor facilities. The problem is to find a good location for creating a harbor, and the feasibility of accomplishing this with the use of nuclear force. Feasibility includes blast effects, radiation hazards, the number of weapons needed, and economic considerations. Economic considerations include the cost of treating a harbor of sufficient depth and area, the building of harbor facilities, and the estimated savings and advantages of the new harbor. Several meetings were held with naval personnel of the Military Liaison group at UCRL to discuss the general problems of harbors. Thirty-three different ports were given a preliminary investigation.

Liquid filled gap test development. Quarterly report, October--December, 1971 (open access)

Liquid filled gap test development. Quarterly report, October--December, 1971

The basic goal of this project is to develop an adequate process for measuring the shock sensitivity of explosive powders (before mixing them into PBX`s, ECX`s or PEX`s, for example). Particle size analysis was performed on several lots of HMX. Two lots were selected to provide three sieve cuts which will be used to give a controlled test of the effect of particle size on shock sensitivity.

Machining parameter study. Quarterly report, July--September, 1971

Tests indicate that certain machine tool conditions cause differences in the measured tensile creep of LX-04-1. Eight machining conditions were studied; high RPM, high feed rate, and shallow depth of cut gave the best results in terms of longest time to rupture while requiring moderate machining time.

Mathematical analysis of HE data. Quarterly report, July--September, 1971 (open access)

Mathematical analysis of HE data. Quarterly report, July--September, 1971

A new approach to the analysis of capacitor discharge unit (CDU) current-time traces is discussed. The method involves the formulation of a mathematical model based on physical considerations of the system. The major objective in the analysis of a CDU current trace is the calculation of inductance (L) and resistance (R) of the system.
