Response of Shortgrass Plains Vegetation to Chronic and Seasonally Administered Gamma Radiation (open access)

Response of Shortgrass Plains Vegetation to Chronic and Seasonally Administered Gamma Radiation

In order to determine the effect of radiation on the structure of native shortgrass plains vegetation, an 8750 Ci 137Cs source was installed on the Central Plains Experimental Range near Nunn, Colorado; The experimental area was divided into 6 treatment sectors, a control, 2 sectors for chronic exposure (irradiation initiated April 1969 and continuing as of August 1971), and one each for spring, summer and late fall seasonal semi-acute (30 day), exposures which were administered during April, July and December, 1969, respectively. Community structure was measured by coefficient of community and diversity index. Yield was determined by clipping plots in September 1970 and visual estimates in September 1969 and 1970 for the grass-sedge component of the vegetation. Individual species sensitivity was determined by density data recorded in April, June and September of 1969 and 1970 and by a phenological index recorded at weekly intervals during the 1969 and 1970 growing seasons. The response of the vegetation was similar whether determined by coefficient of community or diversity with diversity being a more sensitive measure of effects. In the chronically exposed sectors, the exposure rate which resulted in a 50 per cent reduction in these 2 parameters (CC50 or D50) was still …

An Analog Method for Measuring the Longitudinal Coupling Impedance of a Relativistic Particle Beam With Its Environmnet (open access)

An Analog Method for Measuring the Longitudinal Coupling Impedance of a Relativistic Particle Beam With Its Environmnet

The stability of a coasting beam against self-bunching (negative mass instability) may be expressed in terms of a beam coupling impedance. The impedance has contributions from self-fields, wall impedance, and curvature effects. This paper describes procedures for measuring the wall and curvature contributions to the coupling impedance by means of an analog in which the beam is replaced by a conductor propagating a TEM-like mode. Conditions are derived under which the measurements are valid, various measurement procedures are described and results of the application of the method to the compressor of an electron ring accelerator are reported.

The Use of rf-Knockout for Determination of the Characteristics of the Transverse Coherent Instability of an Intense Beam (open access)

The Use of rf-Knockout for Determination of the Characteristics of the Transverse Coherent Instability of an Intense Beam

The response of an intense beam of interacting particles to a deflecting rf-signal is computed theoretically and shown to be closely related to transverse coherent beam stability. It is shown that the beam response to sinusoidal excitation provides a direct measure of the stability of beam modes for given machine conditions (beam intensity, octupole current, sextupole current, momentum spread, etc.). This measurement includes the properties of the beam surroundings as well as the frequency spread effective for Landau damping. Since it is generally difficult to evaluate theoretically the wall and beam properties that enter into stability calculations, the information which can be obtained from rf excitation experiments should be very valuable; especially in devising practical procedures for reducing the severity of coherent transverse instabilities.

Equipment Capability Study of the Mettler DWA Automatic Filling Balance

A process capability study was made to evaluate the capability of the Mettler DWA Automatic Filling Balance to dispense desired weights of material. Under ideal or relatively normal conditions the balance met the manufacturer's stated rating. For somewhat abnormal material, the rating was not quite met. An additional calculation is given to indicate expected improvement if abnormal material could be weighed under ideal conditions.

Study of Secondary Particles Produced by 200 and 500 GeV Protons in Emulsion Chambers

The objectives are: (1) Comparison between the beam energy and the primary energy as determined by properties of secondary particles, in order to check the method currently used in cosmic ray experiments; (2) The distribution of energy given to {gamma}-rays and the distribution of elasticity of collisions; and (3) Search for short-lived particles as found by the author in an emulsion chamber exposed to cosmic rays.

Hanford radiochemical site decommissioning demonstration program

A program is proposed for the innovation, development, and demonstration of technologies necessary to decommission the Hanford radiochemical plant area to the extent that the sites can have unrestricted public access. The five tasks selected for development and demonstration of restoration techniques were restoration of a burial ground, decommissioning of a separations plant, restoration of a separations plant waste interim storage tank farm, restoration of a liquid disposal area, and disposal of large contaminated equipment. Process development requirements are tabulated and discussed. A proposed schedule and estimated costs are given. (JSR)

Plowshare sequential device test (open access)

Plowshare sequential device test

For over a year we have been advocating the development of a hardened or ruggedized version of Diamond which will be suitable for sequential detonation of multiple explosives in one emplacement hole. A Plowshare-sponsored device development test, named `Yacht` is proposed for execution in Area 15 at the Nevada Test Site [NTS] in late September 1972. The test is designed to evaluate the ability of a ruggedized Diamond-type explosive assembly to withstand the effects of an adjacent nuclear detonation in the same emplacement hole and then be sequentially fired. The objectives and experimental plan for this concept is provided.
