Now one of the largest - often the largest - markets for the sale of stocker and feeder cattle, the Thursday auction sales often run into the early hours of Friday before the last group of cattle passes through the auction ring in the long building, center of picture. Railroad tracks ring the outer areas of the yard, bringing in cattle and feed and hauling out car loads of cattle destined for distant points, although trucks now are used in greater numbers for shipment to and from the yards."

Hall's proposed $82.6 million tax increase clashed sharpley today at a legislative publice hearing in the State Capitol. Opponets called for a host of alternatives to the Hall proposal, one of which would put it to a vote of the people. Forces which support the governor asked legislators to stand behind him and vote the neccessary money. The hearing attracted what, Virgil Tinker, chief master of arms of the house of representatives termed "the biggest crowd we've ever had in here." He said slightly over 800 persons were jammed into the house chamber, some of them standing, and that about 500 had been turned away. As a list of 23 speakers, pro and con, started presenting their views, a new legislative development occurred. Photograph used for a story in the Oklahoma City Times newspaper. Caption: "State Rep. Ed Cole, D-Okmulgee, already at odds with the speaker of the house of representatives, announced today he has accepted leadership of a fight to defeat Gov. Hall's proposed $82.6 million tax increase. He is one of a group of six democrates, alternately referred to as the "Surly Six" or the "Leper Colony," who have been stripped of meaningful committee assignments after an effort last year to defeat Rep. Rex Privett, D-Meramec, for re-election as speaker. Defeat Forecast CXole declared that "as of this morning we have enough votes pledged to defeat the tax increases." Heacknowledged, through, that Gov. Hall has not yet thrown the full force of his office behind passage of the tax measures. "It's my opinion," Cole said, "that the governor will move into the speaker's office in the next few days and start breaking arms, calling house members in one at a time to deal with them." However, I do darn-well object to the flying of a non-American flag from the flagpole that is reserved speciffically for the beautiful Stars and Stripes. I don't know what the so-called "Black Liberation Flag" is and I don't really care, but it is not the flag of this country and has no business flying at our capitol. Since demonstrators were permitted to replace the American flag with a non-American flag, I would like to know if I will end up down at the police headquarters if I bring a flag of Confederacy down and fly it from the same pole - or am I to be discriminated against because of my color?"

Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "The State Fair of Oklahoma's B-47 crash landed from an altitude of 20 feet Saturday when a boom crane holding the tail section malfunctioned. No one was hurt, although workmen had hovered closely around and under the plane minutes earlier. The B-47, the first of three planes scheduled to be placed on the fairgrounds, was suspended from two cranes, a large one that held up most of the weight and a small one that held up the tail. A weld broke on the small crane causing the boom to bend and sending the tail crashing to the ground. A workman had stepped away seconds before the accident. Officials said damage to the tail, at right, could be repaired. Finally, after some slow and precise maneuvering, workmen got the plane secured to the post that will hold the plane above the ground."

Oklahoma City firemen were kept on the run Saturday battling more than 50 grass fires which resulted from dry, warm weather. "It was a busy day," fire dispatcher Capt. John Lovely said. Amid "critically dangerous" fire conditions, a large grass fire and heavy smoke covered the area north of NW 8 almost to NW 10, from N Villa to May. Eleven pieces of fire fighting equipment were needed to control the fire that began at 4:27 p.m. The last fire truck didn't leave until 5 1/2 hours later at 10 p.m. Soot-smeared and dog-tired firemen fought to keep the blaze contained in the 86 degree weather. Fire officials said their main concern was to keep the fire from crossing Lime Creek into residential area and on the north side of the fire, from several businesses on NW 10......Although the largest grass fire Saturday, Lovely said there were also "in excess of 50 grass fire today in the city." Winds hampered fire-"
