Moisture movement in soils on the Hanford Reservation

Methods being studied are as follows: the thermodynamic method based on water potential and thermocouple psychrometers; the tracer method using atmospheric tritium; the annual water balance based on the annual heat balance; the field lysimeter using thermocouple psychrometers; the influence of soil breathing as a result of changes in barometric pressure; and the influence of soil stratification. Progress to date has involved the installation of thermocouple psychrometers from the surface to the water table 310 feet below. These instruments are in the process of equilibration. Isothermal methods of analyzing water potential must be extended to include nonisothermal conditions which are dominant at the Hanford Reservation. Tracer techniques using tritium analyses of soil samples have successfully demonstrated that archaic water exists in virgin soil at the Hanford Reservation from a depth of approximately 7 meters to the water table, indicating that percolation has been limited to lesser depths. The annual heat balance indicates that quantities of water many times greater than the annual average precipitation of 16 centimeters can be evaporated from the soils at the Hanford Reservation during a normal summer. This indicates that the critical precipitation (P/sub c/) value may be greater than 30 to 50 centimeters of water. …

An Investigation of the Components of the Neutral Beam Produced by High Energy Protons at Nal Using the 30 Inch Bubble Chamber (open access)

An Investigation of the Components of the Neutral Beam Produced by High Energy Protons at Nal Using the 30 Inch Bubble Chamber

We wish to search for new neutral particles by investigating the composition of a wide angle neutral beam produced by high energy protons on a Be target. Photons in the beam will be removed by a Pb converter. The resultant neutral beam will be incident on the 30 inch bubble chamber. The composition of the beam will be determined from the kinematic analysis of selected interactions in the bubble chamber, through the decays of neutral particles and through possible anomalies in the hydrogen interactions. As a byproduct we will measure the K-Long flux through the process K-Long + P {yields} K-Short + all. By a slight change in the geometry we can look at a region immediately downstream of the target and measure the characteristics of neutral particles arising from the decay of hyperons and other particles produced in the Be target. We do not require any external equipment besides beam monitoring equipment. We request an initial exposure of 20,000 pictures.

pi+ / pi- - p and p-p elastic scattering (open access)

pi+ / pi- - p and p-p elastic scattering

When experiment 7 was designed they proposed to do {pi}{sup {+-}}-p and p-p elastic scattering. While we were obviously aware of the interest in doing K{sup {+-}}-p and {bar p}-p scattering they felt unsure of having suitable Cerenkov counters available to clearly separate the particles at the time we would run. As a result we did not propose to measure these. In the past 3 months two developments have changed the situation. First we have built and tested a threshold counter for use at NAL. From that test we have concluded that the quantum efficiency of the new RCA 31000M phototubes is a factor of 2 higher than that of tubes previously available. Second, the total cross section experiment has definitely been assigned to run before us and it will supply some of the Crenkov counters needed. We are therefore confidence that we can run {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}} and p{sup {+-}} differential cross sections. We propose to take data on all three reactions simultaneously so that we are not requesting additional accelerator time. This will mean that the statistical accuracy of K{sup {+-}}-p and {bar p}-p will be poor at the larger t values in the experiment. However the …

Search for Mossbauer type nuclear collisions with the high energy protons (open access)

Search for Mossbauer type nuclear collisions with the high energy protons

The collision of a high energy projectile with a massive target (nucleon cluster) can considerably increase the center of mass energy available at NAL. In some cases such as neutrino interactions, the increased center mass energy might conceivably be ''traded'' for higher neutrino energies. Thus determination of the characteristics and the fraction of collisions with nuclei that involve large target masses is of interest. We propose to attempt such a determination using sever (A, Z) targets placed directly in front of the 30 inch hydrogen bubble chamber exposed to a 400 or 500 GeV/c proton beam. We will also search for new particles produced in heavy nuclei near the target and survey the K-Short spectrum produced in complex nuclei. We require no additional equipment but the bubble chamber and the beam. 60,000 photographs are requested.

A proposal to study slow secondary particle distributions in pi -p and pp reactions in the 30 inch bubble chamber

A set of runs for the 30 inch hydrogen bubble chamber for {pi}{sup -} and proton at various momenta is proposed for a total of 200,000 useable fames. The runs are aimed at providing quick answers to questions relating to the limiting fragmentation hypothesis as well as a preliminary survey of multiparticle final states.

SPECIFIC PROTONATION OF THE CARCINOGEN 7, 12-DIMETHYIBENZ [a]ANTHRACENE AND CHARGE LOCALIZATION IN THE a-COMPLEX (open access)

SPECIFIC PROTONATION OF THE CARCINOGEN 7, 12-DIMETHYIBENZ [a]ANTHRACENE AND CHARGE LOCALIZATION IN THE a-COMPLEX

In the class of the polycondensed aromatic hydrocarbons, the concept of localized charge in a {sigma}-complex, e.g., the carbonium ion formed by addition of a proton or other electrophile to an aromatic ring, has so far received experimental evidence only in the case of anthracene. The ultraviolet spectrum of this compound in sulfuric acid is similar to that of the benzhydryl cation. Ph{sub c}C{sup +}Me. This result implies the protonation of anthracene at one meso-carbon atom and the localization of the positive charge at the other. The {sigma}-complex of the potent carcinogen 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) in acidic medium offers another example of this type of charge localization. The determination of structure was achieved by comparing the NMR spectra of DMBA in neutral and acidic solvents. The ratio of the integrated intensities of the proton peaks in the spectrum of DMBA is, from right to left, 3:3:5:1:1:2:1. The assignment of the 7-CH{sub 3} ({sigma}3.00) and 12-CH{sub 3} ({sigma}3.29) resonances was made by comparison with the spectra of 7-methylbenz[a]anthracene (7-CH{sub 3}, {sigma}3.03) and 12-methylbenz[a]anthracene (12-CH{sub 3}, {sigma}3.32) under the same conditions. A good general correlation exists between the methyl chemical shifts of the twelve monosubstituted methylbenzanthrancenes and the corresponding aryl protons of benzanthracene.

Mechanism Op Action Op P-Hydroxybenzoate Hybrozylase Frompseudomonas Putida. Iii. The Enzyme-Subtrate Complex

The mechanism of action of p-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase from Pseudomonas putida, strain M-6, has been investigated. The aromatic substrate analogues, benzoate, p-fluorobenzoate, p-chlorobenzoate, p-nitrobenzoate, p-aminobenzoate, and 6-hydroxynicotinate, are found to be competitive inhibitors. This finding differs from the previously reported noncompetitive behavior in a different buffer system. The optical activity of the enzyme-inhibitor complex is studied. From the kinetic and circular dichroism (CD) measurements, they have found that the carboxyl moiety is necessary and sufficient for the enzyme-substrate binding, whereas the hydroxyl group alone will not lead to binding. There are two classes of inhibitory analogues: one causes changes in CD spectra of the enzyme similar to those evoked by the substrate, and the other does not cause significant changes. the results indicate that more than one mode of enzyme-inhibitor interaction is involved. The CD of the enzyme-NADPH complex under anaerobic conditions suggests that the oxidized enzyme and reduced pyridine nucleotide form a complex, both in the absence and presence of the substrate, p-hydroxybenzoate. Furthermore, evidence for a ternary complex is given.
