Douglas United Nuclear monthly report, March 1971 (open access)

Douglas United Nuclear monthly report, March 1971

Two designs of thin annulus neptunium target elements, fabricated to produce medical grade Pu-238 in the Hanford production reactors and to be problem-free in separations and waste disposal operations, had successful in-reactor performances. Results of the BNW separations are not yet available. Examination of five N Reactor ball channels revealed no graphite breakage. The separations which were evident in only two channels were not great enough to result in ball losses after a ball drop. KE Reactor deactivation activities to affect a standby condition continued. N Reactor deactivation activities have been limited to criteria and procedure development and the scoping of necessary capital work. No irreversible physical changes have been made.

An Investigation of the Components of the Neutral Beam Produced by High Energy Protons at Nal Using the 30 Inch Bubble Chamber (open access)

An Investigation of the Components of the Neutral Beam Produced by High Energy Protons at Nal Using the 30 Inch Bubble Chamber

We wish to search for new neutral particles by investigating the composition of a wide angle neutral beam produced by high energy protons on a Be target. Photons in the beam will be removed by a Pb converter. The resultant neutral beam will be incident on the 30 inch bubble chamber. The composition of the beam will be determined from the kinematic analysis of selected interactions in the bubble chamber, through the decays of neutral particles and through possible anomalies in the hydrogen interactions. As a byproduct we will measure the K-Long flux through the process K-Long + P {yields} K-Short + all. By a slight change in the geometry we can look at a region immediately downstream of the target and measure the characteristics of neutral particles arising from the decay of hyperons and other particles produced in the Be target. We do not require any external equipment besides beam monitoring equipment. We request an initial exposure of 20,000 pictures.

Mechanism Op Action Op P-Hydroxybenzoate Hybrozylase Frompseudomonas Putida. Iii. The Enzyme-Subtrate Complex

The mechanism of action of p-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase from Pseudomonas putida, strain M-6, has been investigated. The aromatic substrate analogues, benzoate, p-fluorobenzoate, p-chlorobenzoate, p-nitrobenzoate, p-aminobenzoate, and 6-hydroxynicotinate, are found to be competitive inhibitors. This finding differs from the previously reported noncompetitive behavior in a different buffer system. The optical activity of the enzyme-inhibitor complex is studied. From the kinetic and circular dichroism (CD) measurements, they have found that the carboxyl moiety is necessary and sufficient for the enzyme-substrate binding, whereas the hydroxyl group alone will not lead to binding. There are two classes of inhibitory analogues: one causes changes in CD spectra of the enzyme similar to those evoked by the substrate, and the other does not cause significant changes. the results indicate that more than one mode of enzyme-inhibitor interaction is involved. The CD of the enzyme-NADPH complex under anaerobic conditions suggests that the oxidized enzyme and reduced pyridine nucleotide form a complex, both in the absence and presence of the substrate, p-hydroxybenzoate. Furthermore, evidence for a ternary complex is given.
