Truncilla truncata, Specimen #1220

One preserved mussel specimen including both the left and right valves. The specimen exhibits a triangular shape; thick shell; white internal coloring; brown external coloring; no external sculpturing. Collected in the Trinity basin. The specimen measures between 60 - 100 mm in length and was assessed to be recently dead when collected.

Caption: "NORMAN-An Oklahoma Army National Guard training helicopter crashed about 1:30 p.m. Saturday on Norman's southeast edge, destroying the two-man craft but apparently leaving its only occupant with minor injuries. The pilot, 31-year-old Huston C. Sansome, Walters, was taken to Norman Municipal Hospital and later transferred to Tinker Air Force Base Hospital where he was listed in good condition. The shattered helicopter came to rest in an open field approximately 500 feet southeast of the intersection of 24th Avenue Southeast and Lindsay Street. An unidentified boy reportedly spotted the downed craft and notified Army National Guard officials. Capt. Jim Haney of the Guard said Sansome had been flying an OH-23B observation helicopter as part of a weekend training session based at Max Westheimer Field in Norman." We don't have any idea what caused the crash,"Haney said, " but we will begin an investigation just as soon as Sansome is allowed to talk to investigators." A national guardsman at the scene said the only clue available was that the tail rotor apparently came off before impact.
