Processes of energy deposition by heavy particle impact. Technical report No. 2

Experimental studies of the Li/sup +/ + He interaction have been extended to smaller internuclear separations to clarify a discrepancy between experiment and theory in the elastic cross sections and to observe and measure cross sections for inelastic excitation. For R less than or equal to 0.5 a/sub 0/ the elastic scattering differential cross section is observed to droop far below that expected from a single-state interaction based on ab initio ground-state potentials. In this same region of R both one- and two-electron excitations of He are observed to be strongly excited, and cross sections were measured for each of them. The lowest inelastic channel is an electron-capture state, which is observed indirectly to be strongly populated also. A diabatic correlation diagram is constructed that exhibits the basic interactions responsible for the excitation.

Photograph taken for a newspaper owned by the Oklahoma Publishing Company. Caption: "NORMAN-An Oklahoma Army National Guard training helicopter crashed about 1:30 p.m. Saturday on Norman's southeast edge, destroying the two-man craft but apparently leaving its only occupant with minor injuries. The pilot, 31-year-old Huston C. Sansome, Walters, was taken to Norman Municipal Hospital and later transferred to Tinker Air Force Base Hospital where he was listed in good condition. The shattered helicopter came to rest in an open field approximately 500 feet southeast of the intersection of 24th Avenue Southeast and Lindsay Street. An unidentified boy reportedly spotted the downed craft and notified Army National Guard officials. Capt. Jim Haney of the Guard said Sansome had been flying an OH-23B observation helicopter as part of a weekend training session based at Max Westheimer Field in Norman." We don't have any idea what caused the crash,"Haney said, " but we will begin an investigation just as soon as Sansome is allowed to talk to investigators." A national guardsman at the scene said the only clue available was that the tail rotor apparently came off before impact. The force of the crash shattered the cockpit's protective shield, tore off the craft's …
