TENTATIVE DESIGN GUIDE FOR CALCULATING THE VIBRATION RESPONSE OF FLEXIBLE CYLINDRICAL ELEMENTS IN AXIAL FLOW. (open access)

TENTATIVE DESIGN GUIDE FOR CALCULATING THE VIBRATION RESPONSE OF FLEXIBLE CYLINDRICAL ELEMENTS IN AXIAL FLOW.

Many reactor and plant equipment components, such as fuel pins, control rods, and heat exchanger tubes, are long, slender, beam-like members which are exposed to nominally axial coolant flow. The flowing coolant represents a source of energy which can induce vibratory motion of these components. This design guide presents a relationship for calculating the root-mean-square (rms) displacement of a flexible rod or tube in axial flow. The relationship is based on the results of a parameter study and is valid for components that can be approximated as beams with either simply-supported or fixed-fixed ends. It is given in terms of beam natural frequency, damping factor, and intensity of the mean-square spectral density of the pressure field in the low-frequency range; all three are functions of mean axial flow velocity. Empirical expressions are developed for damping factor and intensity of the mean-square pressure spectrum. With these, an empirical equation for rms displacement is written which is in terms of known quantities and, therefore, provides a tool which can be used by designers. Since the equation is based on experiments involving a smooth rod in flow with minimal entrance effects, the predicted displacements should be interpreted and used with care. They are …

Proposal to study neutrino interactions in the 30 m**3 NAL bubble chamber with muon identifier (open access)

Proposal to study neutrino interactions in the 30 m**3 NAL bubble chamber with muon identifier

We propose to study high-energy neutrino intersections in the NAL 30 m{sup 3} bubble chamber. A slight alteration of the chamber design will allow a large-solid-angle quantameter to be placed just outside the thin (1/2 inch steel) wall of the bubble chamber. A detector, designed to identify the muon of the interaction is placed outside the vacuum tank. With this hybrid system they can reconstruct the neutrino's energy, the lepton momentum transfer squared, Q{sup 2}, the lepton energy transfer and measure many features of the final hadron state. This system detects with high efficiency over the entire range of variables and is well suited to making a detailed general survey of neutrino interactions in the neutrino energy range 15 to 80 GeV. A million-picture exposure would yield tens of thousands of neutrino interactions with circulating protons at 200 GeV. A similar number of events should be obtained with protons at 500 GeV.

Proposal to study pi -p reactions at 60 and 200 GeV/c in the 30 inch hydrogen bubble chamber at NAL (open access)

Proposal to study pi -p reactions at 60 and 200 GeV/c in the 30 inch hydrogen bubble chamber at NAL

A request is made for 50,000 photographs of 60 GeV/c {pi}{sup -} and 50,000 photographs of 200 GeV/c {pi}{sup -} in the Argonne 30 inch hydrogen bubble chamber at NAL. Reasons are given explaining how good physics can be done with this chamber. This experiment is a natural extension of the work of the group and will be of great usefulness in preparing for experiments with the CERN II accelerator.

NAL bubble chamber proposal: K-p and p anti-p interactions at 200 GeV (open access)

NAL bubble chamber proposal: K-p and p anti-p interactions at 200 GeV

We propose to study K{sup -}p and {bar p}p interactions at 200 GeV in the hydrogen filled NAL 30'' bubble chamber with a supplementary visual spectrometer. We request 200,000 pictures. This exposure is intended as a follow up experiment to our proposal ''Multiparticle {pi}{sup -}p Interactions at 130 GeV and at the Highest Energy'' of April 23, 1971.
