Test and Evaluation of Alco/BLH Prototype Sodium-Heated Steam Generator: Final Report (open access)

Test and Evaluation of Alco/BLH Prototype Sodium-Heated Steam Generator: Final Report

A 30-Mwt prototype sodium-to-sodium intermediate heat exchanger and a 30-Mwt prototype sodium-heated steam generator were tested in combined operation in its Sodium Components Test Installation. This report contains the results of test and evaluation of the steam generator. During plant performance tests, performance degradation was observed, which resulted in the initiation of a diagnostic test series. This test series revealed that under certain operating conditions, the thermohydraulic characteristic of the steam generator changed either suddenly or gradually, resulting in overall performance degradation. A structural failure, requiring retirement of the unit, occurred before the diagnostic test series and analytical support effort were completed. This report describes the thermohydraulic and structural performance, including the structural failures, and related evaluation analyses of the Alco/BLH prototype steam generator performed prior to termination of the test and evaluation program. In addition, the report presents a post-test examination plan to obtain data that could possibly explain the cause of performance anomalies and structural failures experienced during testing.

PHOTOCHEMICAL COUPLING OF BENZO [a]PYRENE WITH 1-METHYL-CYTOSINE;PHOTO-ENHANCEMENT OF CARCINOGENICITY (open access)

PHOTOCHEMICAL COUPLING OF BENZO [a]PYRENE WITH 1-METHYL-CYTOSINE;PHOTO-ENHANCEMENT OF CARCINOGENICITY

Irradiation of the carcinogenic benzo[a]pyrene (I) with 1-methylcytosine hydrochloride IIa (molar ratio 1:10) at 3500 {angstrom} in methanol-acetone produces the 6-(1-methylcytos-5-yl)-benzo[a]pyrene (III). The structure of the product shows the hydrocarbon bound through the most active 6-carbon atom to the nucleophilic 5-position of the base. In the second part, the possibility of observing carcinogenic effects on the mouse skin from non-carcinogenic hydrocarbons under the action of UV light is investigated. Both experiments provide evidence that the 4,5-double bond (K region) of I presumably does not play a role in triggering the cancer process.

Terminal Report-Research in Nuclear Physics

For the past six and one-half years the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission under Contract AT(11-1)1468, has supported research in nuclear physics at the University of Arizona. During this period, from April 1, 1965, to September 30, 1971, the AEC has provided $567,000.00 in operational funds and $44,350.00 as a special equipment grant. This report summarizes the research accomplished under that contract.

Calculational results concerning some laser-initiated fusion proposals (open access)

Calculational results concerning some laser-initiated fusion proposals

Some proposals appearing in the literature of laser-initiated thermonuclear fusion microexplosions which assertedly produce about as much thermonuclear energy as was inputted in laser light have been evaluated on physics simulation computer codes. These codes simulate in considerable detail the physical processes deemed to be relevant in such proposed schemes to produce a time history of the proposed microexplosion system. Output of such codes will be presented to demonstrate that the thermonuclear performance of such systems fall far short of approximation-rich analytic estimates, and the role of such approximations in producing such discrepancies is briefly discussed.

Liquid metal bearing technology for large, high-temperature, sodium rotating machinery. Third topical report design data handbook for externally pressurized journal bearings including turbulence and inertia effects (open access)

Liquid metal bearing technology for large, high-temperature, sodium rotating machinery. Third topical report design data handbook for externally pressurized journal bearings including turbulence and inertia effects

Design data for a Deep Pocket Hydrostatic Journal Bearing is presented. A wide range of possible operating conditions in the turbulent regime is examined. Both pressure flow induced turbulence and Bernoulli type inertia effects are accounted for in the generation of this data. Design data is presented for two bearing configurations, one selected for good stiffness characteristics, and the other with good balance between flow and stiffness. Tables of data are presented which provide load, flow, stiffness and damping of these bearings as a function of eccentricity ratio. In addition curves providing off-design information are presented, which may be used to evaluate tolerance effects and to study the performance of non-standard designs.
