Examination of four-sodium-water reaction target tubes (open access)

Examination of four-sodium-water reaction target tubes

Metallurgical examinations and evaluations were performed on a group of four target tubes from Atomic Power Development Associates (APDA) Rig 10. This group included two 2/sup 1///sub 4/ Cr--1 Mo ferritic steel tubes, one Type 304 SS, and one Incoloy 800 tube. These tubes had been exposed to small leaks of water in 600/sup 0/F sodium. Metallographic data indicate that the material loss (wastage) was primarily due to impact (or erosion) of liquid particles. No evidence of corrosion was found in the wasted areas of any target tubes. Minor corrosion was observed on the outside diameter of the austenitic stainless-steel tubes only in areas away from impact; no corrosion was detected on the outside diameter of the ferritic steel tubes. Hardness measurements and microstructural analyses revealed that the maximum temperature may have reached 1600/sup 0/F in the wasted areas. This localized temperature increase appeared to enhance the wastage process for all target tubes regardless of composition. Surface grain elongation and plastic deformation lines were observed in wasted areas, as well as in other areas. However, their cause(s) cannot be ascertained with respect to deformation due to water-jet impact, or deformation due to fabrication and handling, or both. Based on the …

Magnetic susceptibility and neutron diffraction investigation of. cap alpha. -/sup 242/Pu (open access)

Magnetic susceptibility and neutron diffraction investigation of. cap alpha. -/sup 242/Pu

Magnetic susceptibility and neutron diffraction measurements were made on a high purity, polycrystalline sample of ..cap alpha..-phase /sup 242/Pu. The susceptibility results show the existence of weak ferromagnetism below 50/sup 0/K. This suggests that the ..cap alpha..-phase is antiferromagnetic, the observed ferromagnetic moment (9.5 x 10/sup -4/ emu per gram of sample at 4.35/sup 0/K) originating within antiferromagnetic domain walls. No evidence for antiferromagnetic ordering was observed in the neutron diffraction study suggesting that the moment per Pu atom is too small to observe with this technique.

One-dimensional transport code for one-group problems in plane geometry

Equations and results are given for various methods of solution of the one-dimensional transport equation for one energy group in plane geometry with inelastic scattering and an isotropic source. After considerable investigation, a matrix method of solution was found to be faster and more stable than iteration procedures. A description of the code is included which allows for up to 24 regions, 250 points, and 16 angles such that the product of the number of angles and the number of points is less than 600.

Behavior of sonic tagged chinook salmon and steelhead trout migrating past Hanford thermal discharges (1967)

Sonic tagged, adult chinook and steelhead were tracked in 1967 during upstream migration past cooling water discharges from nuclear reactors. All fish migrated near shorelines, showing preference for the river bank opposite reactors. Clear responses to local temperature differences were exhibited by few fish, these responses being to small shoreline seepages rather than to main center-channel outfalls.

Food and Feeding of Juvenile Chinook Salmon in the Central Columbia River in Relation to Thermal Discharges and Other Environmental Features (open access)

Food and Feeding of Juvenile Chinook Salmon in the Central Columbia River in Relation to Thermal Discharges and Other Environmental Features

The relationship of thermal discharges from operating Hanford reactors to food and feeding of juvenile chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the central Columbia River, Washington was studied in 1968 and 1969. The primary objectives were to (1) evaluate the food composition and feeding activities of the fish and (2) determine if heated effluents influenced their welfare. Environmental conditions (seasonal changes in river temperatures and flow volumes) in relation to thermal requirements of young chinook are detailed. Data on food organisms utilized by the fish in 1968 and 1969 are presented, whereas analyses for possible thermal effects are based on the more extensive 1969 data. No consistent differences attributable to thermal increments were evident. The lack of detectable effects apparently results from the fact that the main discharge plumes occur in midriver and the effluents are well mixed before reaching inshore feeding areas. The transient nature of fish at each sampling site and the availability of food organisms in the river drift are ecological factors affecting critical thermal evaluation.

Chondrococcus columnaris disease of fishes: Influence of Columbia River fish ladders (open access)

Chondrococcus columnaris disease of fishes: Influence of Columbia River fish ladders

Mortalities in salmonid populations induced by Chondrococcus columnaris are usually associated with warm river water temperatures. Increasing use of the Columbia River for agriculture, industry and power will introduce additional added heat increments which could result,in additional growth of C. columnaris and proliferation of the disease. It is necessary, therefore, that we examine the existing environmental factors which contribute to the disease in the river. Proliferation and release of C. columnaris from fish ladders was demonstrated by the large number of organisms isolated from the Rocky Reach fish ladder on the Columbia River during 1965. The authors found that C. columnaris release into the water was related to the high incidence of infected coarse fishes and anadromous salmonids in the ladder. In this report, we will describe results which suggest that fish ladders may be important, sites for transferring the disease from fish indigenous to the Columbia River to migrating anadromous salmonids.
