Puerto Rico Energy Center Study: Executive Study (open access)

Puerto Rico Energy Center Study: Executive Study

From background: The study is an outgrowth of investigations by the Atomic Energy Commission and the Office of Saline Water into the use of nuclear energy to supply heat for desalting seawater and for generating electricity, and of work on the energy center concept conducted at the AEC's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The bases for the study were set forth in a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Commissioner James T. Ramey of the United States Atomic Energy Commission, Under Secretary David S. Black of the United States Department of the Interior, Acting Executive Director Fernando Torrent of the Puerto Rico Water Resources Authority, and Executive Director Orlando Gonzalez of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority.

Puerto Rico Energy Center Study: Executive Summary (open access)

Puerto Rico Energy Center Study: Executive Summary

From introduction: The scope of work of the study was to compile and analyze information on the resources and requirements of the southwestern, southeastern, and north-central coastal regions of the Commonwealth, and assess industrial and agricultural activities which in conjunction with the power and desalting plants, might comprise the energy center complex. The study was also to identify the need for any experimental, pilot or demonstration projects which benefit the practical application of the Energy Center concept in Puerto Rico.

The Flat Top Uranium Mine, Grants, New Mexico (open access)

The Flat Top Uranium Mine, Grants, New Mexico

From introduction: To improve understanding of uranium mineralization of the Todilto Limestone of Late Jurassic age in the Grants district, New Mexico, the mines active in 1957 were reviewed to determine the major types of deposits. A representative example of each type was selected and mapped in great detail to establish a prototype. It was hoped that the analysis of prototypes might shed considerable light on the mineralization process and aid evaluation of other deposits by offering a standard of comparison.

Uranium in the Southern United States (open access)

Uranium in the Southern United States

From introduction: In this study on raw material sources of uranium the Southern Interstate Nuclear Board has catalogued all known occurrences of uranium and some references to thorium in a 17-state area (P1. 1). These occurrences have been evaluated as potential sources of uranium by the State Geological Surveys and the consultant group of SINB. Favorability guides have been applied to the known occurrences and recommendations have been made for future action by the states involved, federal agencies, or by industry. State recommendations are included in state-by-state summaries. The state reports were written either by personnel of the State Geological Surveys or were abstracted from State geological survey data by members of the consultant group...The purpose of this study was to compile information on and systematically assess uranium and other radioactive occurrences in the region. The SINB undertook the project because of its statutory, interstate capability as an extension of government in each of the 17 states, an arrangement that lends itself effectively to this cooperative undertaking.

Supersonic Two-Dimensional Jet-Interaction Studies (open access)

Supersonic Two-Dimensional Jet-Interaction Studies

Abstract: The report describes the results of an experimental study involving the injection of a gaseous secondary jet into an unbounded supersonic flow field which was uniform outside of a turbulent boundary layer. The investigation was principally concerned with the formulation of the shock wave shapes and streamline patterns to be associated with typical turbulent, two-dimensional jet-interaction flows. In support of this objective, results are presented for a Mach 5 test conducted using a flat-plate model containing a sonic secondary jet directed normal to the main-stream. The jet-interaction flow field was primarily investigated for jet strengths (ratio of jet gas stagnation pressure to free-stream static pressure) of 180 and 550. Intermediate strengths were also studied but in lesser detail. Local flow properties were measured throughout the flow field and surface pressure distributions were recorded fore and aft of the secondary jet. From these data and complementary shadowgraph studies, the streamline pattern and attendant shock structure were formulated.
