Climb of Dislocations in Magnesium Oxide Single Crystals (open access)

Climb of Dislocations in Magnesium Oxide Single Crystals

The wave like pattern, observed in dislocation dipoles of uniform spacing during annealing, which starts from the ends of the dipole and gets damped toward the centre, has been attributed to controlled vacancy migration. A theory has been set-up to give activation energy for the process, 60,700 + 2,000 cal/mole. This value has been compared with an independent study of pipe diffusion, in which a prismatic loop inside the foil is connect to both surfaces of the foil by screw dislocation.

Cluster Attachment Seal Leakage Test. Final Report (open access)

Cluster Attachment Seal Leakage Test. Final Report

These types of seals are used in the attachment of the cluster hardware to the support plate in order to contain the SSCA hydrogen flow. These O-rings, grafoil seats, and metal-to-metal seals were tested under varied laboratory conditions. Data obtained were used to predict the leakage for the NERVA reactor under rated conditions. The predicted leakage was compared with the Cluster Hardware Specification No. EC-677558 requirements for leakage. Each seal, when assembled to proposed reactor assembly conditions, was found to be capable of meeting the sealing requirements. Required seating forces or seating torques were determined for each seal.

Control of ZrH Reactor Reactivity Perturbations During Orbital Maneuvers (open access)

Control of ZrH Reactor Reactivity Perturbations During Orbital Maneuvers

Scheduled and inadvertant vehicle maneuvers in manned and unmanned space missions may result in reactivity perturbations to the ZrH reactor due to fuel and control drum motion from acceleration forces. Potential power and outlet coolant temperature excursions could result in interruptions of PCS power generation, or excessive coolant temperatures if uncontrolled. It may be possible to eliminate reactivity perturbations by suitably loading the fuel segments so they cannot "rattle" within the cladding and designing a control system with "zero" backlash. The feasibility of these design features has not yet been evaluated. This analysis compares potential uncontrolled reactor transients with allowable transients for uninterrupted electrical power generation from a Brayton system, and presents a control scheme to limit transient reactor outlet temperature to 1250°F for a system designed to operate at a nominal 1200°F reactor outlet. Potential uncontrolled transients could result in a reactor outlet temperature swing of ±77°F about a nominal 1200°F and a reactor power swing at +92 Kvt and -67 Kvt about a nominal 130 Kvt for the Brayton System,
