The problem of this study was to develop an instrument which would reveal whether certain fundamental philosophical and educational beliefs are held by public school teachers in the areas of elementary education, secondary education, and guidance.

Copper(II) complexes with antiferromagnetic exchange are well known. On the contrary, antiferromagnetic exchange in oxovanadium(IV) complexes is rather new and not well established. Very few oxovanadium(IV) complexes have been reported to have this anomalous magnetic property. In the investigation of the magnetic properties of oxovanadium(IV) complexes, we have successfully prepared two series of new oxovanadium(IV) complexes with N-salicylideneamino acids.

The major problem investigated was to ascertain the extent to which a training program designed specifically to increase frustration tolerance would reduce selected behavioral problems in institutionalized mentally retarded children. Of lesser importance was the problem of examining the extent to which the prescribed training program had differential effects on brain-injured and non-brain-injured retarded children.

Computers are used in the music field for generation of sound, for composing music, for analysis of music, and for musicological applications, such as cataloguing a bibliography of music literature. These areas are relatively new aspects of computer usage, and research is being conducted to stay abreast of current technological advancements. Avant-garde composers are challenged by new advances in music. Computer-generated music is one of the new trends, but the composer is usually limited in the use of the medium for two reasons: there are no computers to which he may have access, and/or there is not enough knowledge about computer-generated music. The composer sometimes feels that he must have vast knowledge of the computer before he can attempt to use it in musical composition; however, a limited amount of investigation of computer-generated music has shown that methods can be codified to the point where great technical knowledge is not required of the composer.

The English horn has a background of historical confusion because the instrument was built in many different shapes and was given a new name for each change of form.

The State of Texas is endowed with many valuable resources. It has vast oil and gas deposits, huge timber reserves, and land in abundance. Not least among its re sources is water, the key resource. It is water, even before food, which sustains all life on this earth. Without water the human processes of agriculture, industry, and commerce would be impossible. Water serves as a major source of energy, transportation, and recreation. It is not a risky statement to make that water, above everything else on this earth except land, permits man to exist.

The real importance of the twelve-tone system would seem to lie in its structural possibilities. It combines the inherent potentialities of the theme of a movement in sonata form with those of the theme of a fugue and of variations. It creates a coherent texture throughout the single movements and the work as a whole. It is needless to say that this kind of coherence can also be achieved in serial compositions, that is, in movements in which not the full row of twelve tones, but only seven or eight or nine tones form the basic row.

The Piano Fantasy will be compared to Aaron Copland's other major piano works, the Piano Variations and Piano Sonata, to determine if he has retained his basic stylistic features, although he has employed serial principles more extensively in the piano fantasy than in the other two works and has passed through two different style periods, the "Abstract" (1929-1935) and the American "Folksong" (1934-1955).

This symphony was composed for the purpose of communicating with a contemporary audience and not to please some unknown colleague or future generation. Therefore, experimentation with novel media or systems was rejected in favor of a more conventional approach.

"Music for Orchestra and Electronic Tape" is an attempt to combine the instruments of the symphony orchestra with electronic sounds which were pre-recorded on tape. The composition is divided into three sections, comprising a large ABA' form with an introduction and a coda. An electronic event occurs between each section.

The problem of investigating the possibilities of direct design transfer from plant to fabric and paper was divided into two parts. The first part is concerned with the exploration of the mechanics of the transfer. Invloved in this process are the technique of manipulating tools, of selecting suitable fabrics and paper, of determining chemicals that would facilitate the printing process and of experimenting with ways to preserve the finished design. The evaluation of the usability and durability of the finished print was based on a series of color fastness tests. The second part of this problem is concerned with the exploration of the design possibilities of the medium. The plants were tested and rated according to their visual attributes relative to the elements of design. Combinations of the successful plant prints were used to produce variations of pattern and texture. The results of the investigation were evaluated to determine the versatility of the medium as a design tool and the usefulness of the technique as a practical printing method

Although many volumes concerning the life and works of Johannes Brahms have been written, it has been found that the majority of these writings treat the material of the subject in a rather poetic and romanticized fashion. This is especially unfortunate in those volumes where the works of Brahms are analyzed with pragmatic implications, since Brahms himself eschewed the use of extramusical elements in his composition. This investigation, therefore, is an attempt to present a careful analysis of one of these compositions, the Quintet in B Minor, Op. 115, for clarinet and string quartet.

How important are the basic concepts and principles of drafting usually taught in drafting courses? What methods are used to reproduce drawings?

The subject of the present study, Florence, Biblioteca del Conservatorio di Musica Luigi Cherubini, MS Basevi 2439, abbreviated Florence 2439,1 contains secular and sacred vocal music of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, with texts in French, Dutch, Italian, and Latin.

A comprehensive study of all nineteenth-century New Orleans composers is far beyond the scope of this paper. There are simply too many. An attempt has been made, however, to include as many possible in the text. Others, about whom there is insufficient information to include in a narrative, have been relegated to the appendix, where they are treated in the style of a biographical dictionary. The two most important and influential composers of the century, Gregorion Curto and Theodore von La Hache, are covered individually in chapters two and three, respectively. Their music represents all three of the important aspects of composition of the era: opera, salon, and sacred music. Louis Moreau Gottschalk, probably the most famous composer and performer of the period, has been omitted from this study (other than incidental references) because he has already received considerable attention from numerous other researchers. Likewise, another composer of note, Ernest Guiraud, has been omitted because, even though a native of New Orleans, he left America at an early age and never returned. He should more appropriately be considered in annals of French music. Research in this field, a vital part of the American musical heritage, is by no means complete. …

Oscillation for Prepared Electronic Tape and Symphony Orchestra is a multi-sectional one-movement composition with an aleatory section that has been partially serialized. The piece begins with a five-tone motif on tape which is developed by the orchestra as an introduction to Section I. The principal theme is developed by the strings and brought it to a climax. This climax is immediately interpolated by the five-tone motif slightly altered. At this point the thematic material is mutated and the orchestra goes through a harmonic texture change. The quartal harmonic treatment develops a cluster of tones that resolve into other clusters and the process is repeated to the accelerando of Section II.

This quartet shows the composer's development from a highly chromatic, freely melodic, un-serialized style in movement I, through a still free, but disjunct, somewhat more ordered style in movement II, to a style in movement III which makes much use of serial techniques. This last usage, however, no longer employs the twelve-tone method in a stiff and fettered manner.

The discovery of the production of antibiotic materials by certain members of the Actinomycetales has stimulated the study of these organisms over the last two decades, raising them from a position of little significance to one of noticeable importance. These studies include investigations concerning the physiology and biochemistry of the actinomycetes.
