Fallout concentrations of 12 radionuclides in air: 1962 through mid-1964

Newly developed multidimensional gamma-ray spectrometric counting techniques permit the direct measurement of twelve fallout radionuclides on air filters. Observed concentrations of Be{sup 7}, Na{sub 22}, Mn{sup 54}, Co{sup 60}, Y{sup 88}, Zr{sub 95}Nb{sup 95}, Ru{sup 106}, Sb{sup 124}, Sb{sup 125}, Cs{sup 134}, Cs{sup 137} and Ce{sup 144} during the past two and a half years help explain the origin and fallout rates of the trace radionuclides in air. 14 refs., 1 tab.

Zircaloy-2 process tube activity, C Reactor (open access)

Zircaloy-2 process tube activity, C Reactor

This report presents the dose rates which were observed during the removal of a Zircaloy-2 process tube from C Reactor. The corresponding calculated activity is also presented for the purpose of correlation with the observed dose rate. The tube was removed on July 22, 1964, after having been irradiated by a neutron flux for 560 days (based on time operated efficiency). The tube activity was monitored with a super high range TP (0-5000 R/hr) by suspending a probe through an access port in the floor of the ``D`` machinery room. As tube 3353 was pushed and cut into sections, the highest activity observed was 675 R/hr, which was seen in the center three-foot segment. The corresponding calculated activity was 650 R/hr. The neutron flux profile, as shown by tube activities along its length, was extremely peaked in the center; for example, the area under the activity curve was less than one-third of the area under a cosine curve of the same amplitude and cycle length.

Thulium Oxide Irradiation (open access)

Thulium Oxide Irradiation

Thulium oxide can be irradiated to meet the desired specific heat generation of 1.5 watts per gram as part of a flux amplification test, which will be conducted the early part of FY-1965. To obtain the heat generation level, is calculated that a 120-day irradiation will be required at a flux of 1.1 {times} 10{sup 14} neutrons/cm{sup 2}-sec. if the proposed target element is modified by reducing the thulium oxide wafer thickness from 0.080 to 0.050 inch. Also, the length of the target element should be reduced to not more than 20 inches to minimize the possibility of sticking in the process tube. This would require four targets rather than a single element as proposed. Prior to undertaking this irradiation, it would be desirable to place a prototype target element in the Hanford Test Reactor to determine the approximate rise factor (change in neutron flux level between the target element and adjacent tubes of fuel elements) in order to more precise data for planning the loading pattern in the production test.

DT-IP-434-D: Irradiation effect on ceramic materials

The purpose of the test described in this report was to determine the effect of production reactor flux on ceramic materials being considered for lining the vertical safety rod channels at the production reactors. This document is being written to describe the test, the results to date, and the work which remains to be done. The materials being evaluated in the test are: Aluminum silicate (Maryland Lava Co.); silicon nitride bonded silicon carbide (Norton Co. ``crystalon``); and aluminum oxide 85% (Norton Co. ``Alundum RA-98``).

Design and fabrication of target elements for PT-645-D (open access)

Design and fabrication of target elements for PT-645-D

Target elements were designed and built to fit into 1.25% U{sup 235} driver elements. These targets had an aluminum -- 0.583% lithium alloy core enriched to 63.5% in Li. The targets had a coextruded aluminum jacket as a tritium barrier and a Zircaloy jacket as a corrosion barrier to the 300 C reactor water.

Uranium burnout values

Attached is the interpolated uranium burnout values for .570% through 3.000% U-235. Due to increasing interest in higher U-235 values, this document was issued to replace HW-77929 which contained values to 1.519% U-235. The source data was based on the Reactor Cost Studies burnout schedule obtained from Washington -- AEC.

N-Reactor fuel development pp. 51 through 57, HW-80908 (open access)

N-Reactor fuel development pp. 51 through 57, HW-80908

The imminent use of pressurized water-cooled, metallic uranium fuel elements on a large scale in the N-Reactor not only represents an extrapolation from previous Hanford fuel technology, it represents the only production-scale application of this concept in this country or abroad. Provision of a supporting technology is and will continue to be a major activity at Hanford as only a limited amount of directly applicable R&D will be available from other sites. The major benefit to be achieved through an extensive and continuing fuel program is attainment of the full capabilities entailed in the basic fuel concept at much reduced costs. The initial N-Reactor fuel design represents an estimate of what is required for adequate performance. While the design is intentionally conservative, some features may not fully provide the level of performance required to sustain relatively unhampered reactor operation. Production-scale irradiation experience will provide the feed-back required to give direction to a continuing program to correct any excesses or deficiencies in the initial fuel design. Reduction of unwarranted conservatism in the design will lower fuel fabrication costs; correction of deficiencies will lower irradiation costs through increased time operated efficiency. In addition to design optimization, direct savings in fuel fabrication costs …
