Acid-Base Reactions and Kinetics of the Halates in Fused Nitrates

From Abstract : "The mechanism of the reactions of the halates, bromate, chlorate, and iodate, with dichromate in fused alkali nitrates has been shown to involve a fast equilibrium followed by a slow rate determining strip to give oxygen and halogen gases as final products." Experiments outlined serve as insight into the structure of fused salts or fused electrolytes.

Experimental Studies of Transient Effects in Fast Reactor Fuels (open access)

Experimental Studies of Transient Effects in Fast Reactor Fuels

An experimental program to evaluate the performance of FCR and EFCR fuel during transient operation is outlined, and the initial series of tests are described in some detail. Test results from five experiments in the TREAT reactor, using 1-in. OD SS-clad UOâ‚‚ fuel specimens, are compared with regard to fuel temperatures, mechanical integrity, and post-irradiation appearance. Incipient fuel pin failure limits for transients are identified with maximum fuel temperatures in the range of 7000 deg F. Multiple transient damage to the cladding is likely for transients above the melting point of the fuel.

A Scale-Model Experiment of the Crater Produced Through Terrain of Randomly Varying Elevation by Row Charges (open access)

A Scale-Model Experiment of the Crater Produced Through Terrain of Randomly Varying Elevation by Row Charges

Abstract: "A scale-model experiment was made to check the application of charge spacing rules developed from earlier studies to terrain of randomly varying elevation. Since a prominent possible peacetime use of nuclear explosives is the excavation of a trans-Isthmian canal, the model used was a portion of such a route. The experiment resulted in nearly the desired linear crater dimensions; the spacing rules developed for level trerain give a satisfactory channel when applied to terrain with elevations varying in random fashion."

A Talk on NMR Applied to Polymer Research Given at the Eastern Analytical Symposium - November 14, 1962 (open access)

A Talk on NMR Applied to Polymer Research Given at the Eastern Analytical Symposium - November 14, 1962

The nature and types of internal molecular and thermal motions that polymer chains and polymer segments undergo have a great bearing on the physical behavior of polymeric solids. A relatively new tool is now available that permits us to observe and study internal thermally-induced motions directly at the atomic or molecular level rather than from macroscopic observations. this tool is nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This talk discusses (1) the nature of nuclear magnetic resonance, (2) NMR line shapes and the influence of temperature, (3) NMR line widths and second moments as a function of temperature, and (4) lists six general conclusions.
