Determination of the Stability Constants of Salicylato-Beryllium Complexes by a Distribution Method

An investigation of the solvent extraction behavior of salicylato- beryllium complexes is reported. A simplified method for calculating the stability constants has been developed. The values obtained are beta /sub 1/ = 4.0 x 10/sup 12/ and beta /sub 2/ = 4 3 x 10/sup 22/ in 0.15 M sodium perchlorate. (auth)

An Experimental Study of Phase Variations in Line-of-Sight Microwave Transmissions

From Introduction: "The purpose of this report is to present an analysis of time variations in: (1) the phase (relative to a stable phase reference) if a 9414 Mc/s signal transmitted over this path, referred to hereafter as single-path phase data; (2) the phase observed at one receiving antenna relative to that observed at an adjacent antenna, referred to as phase difference data; (3) atmospheric refractivity as recorded by a microwave refractometer located at the Haleakala terminal; (4) the wind velocity at both ends of the path, and (5) surface atmospheric refractivity measured at 5 stations located on or near the path."

Fuel Element Transient Temperature Studies (open access)

Fuel Element Transient Temperature Studies

A method is presented for the analysis of transient temperatures in a homogeneous circular cylindrical fuel element in a coolant channel with no axial conduction and no heat loss to the channel wall. In addition, some results were obtained for mean fuel element temperatures in power transients for a simpler model, but accounting for details of the axial coolant temperature distribution in the unsteady state. Some methods of surface analysis for the prediction of thermal resistance of metal contacts (open access)

Some methods of surface analysis for the prediction of thermal resistance of metal contacts

"Equations for the heat-transfer coefficient existing at the interface of two metals in contact are discussed. The results of applying the equations (with a graphical determination of the geometric parameters) to an iron--aluminum contact are presented. A method is given for performing the graphical analysis by means of a general purpose analog computer. Data are included that were obtained by applying this method to Blanchard ground stainless steel surfaces in contact. Statistical analysis was applied to surfaces to determine the geometric properties of the contact as a function of root-mean-square roughness and method of surface preparation."

Slowing-Down Spectra of Neutrons in Heavy Water and Light Water Mixtures (open access)

Slowing-Down Spectra of Neutrons in Heavy Water and Light Water Mixtures

The slowing down spectra of neutrons were obtained for heavy water, light water, and mixtures of heavy water and light water. It was assumed that fission neutrons are produced uniformly throughout an infinite moderator and the only process considered was elastic scattering, spherically symmetric in the center-of-mass system. The (n,2n) reaction with the deuterium nucleus and absorption were assumed negligible. The average transfer cross section, fast diffusion coefficient, the slowing down area, and average velocity ratio were obtained for two-group calculations using the epithermal spectra. (auth).

Extraction of Beryllium by Triisooctylamine : the Effect of the Anionic Complexing Agent (open access)

Extraction of Beryllium by Triisooctylamine : the Effect of the Anionic Complexing Agent

The extraction of beryllium by triisooctylamine is measured over the pH range from 1 to 10, in the presence of malonic, maleic, succinic, phthalic, and salicylic acids. Values are obtained for the stability constants of the various metal-acid complexes by potentiometric titration. The degree of extraction is dependent on the abundance of the anionic complex present in the aqueous phase and this is in turn dependent on the strength of the corresponding acid and the stability of the complex. Hazards Report for Insertion of the PM-1-M-2 Element in the SM-1 Core II (open access)

Hazards Report for Insertion of the PM-1-M-2 Element in the SM-1 Core II

Abstract: This technical report describes the Martin Co. PM-1-M-2 test element and analyzes the potential hazard incurred by its inclusion in the SM-1 Core II. A nuclear analysis develops power distributions and reactivity effects. Hydraulic and thermal analyses develop anticipated burnout heat flux ratios. An evaluation of the risk involved with the inclusion of this element is presented. In view of the narrow margin by which the PM-1-M-2 test element meets the minimum burnout ratios as defined by Alco Products, Inc., it is recommended that if time permits that critical facility design verification be accomplished. The PM-1-M-2 test element meets the minimum requirements for insertion in SM-1 Core II and in view of the importance of this element to the PM-1 and PM-3A program, should be considered for insertion.

Radiation Safety and Control Training Manual

Introduction: The Laboratory follows the recommendations of the National Committee on Radiation Protection concerning permissible exposure limits for those working with radiation. A system of controls and regulations has been established which should ensure that no person at the Laboratory will receive more than the permissible exposure. This manual is intended to provide the minimum background necessary for intelligent cooperation with the regulations.

Iteration Methods for Non-Linear Problems (open access)

Iteration Methods for Non-Linear Problems

The methods of successive displacements or relaxation methods are investigated for a class of nonlinear problems. In particular it is shown that these methods are applicable to a large class of nonlinear problems arising from variational problems which yield elliptic equations. Constructive existence and uniqueness theorems are presented for the discrete problem and criteria are given for a practical method of obtaining solutions. The example of a discrete Plateau problem is used to illustrate the feasibility of the results. The processes are also shown to apply to uniformly elliptic problems.

Some Computational Methods for the Study of Diatomic Molecules

"The present work describes some computer-oriented techniques for the application of the laws of quantum mechanics to the problems of determining basic structure of diatomic molecules. At times, calculations of the type described here yield results which can be compared directly with experiment to check the validity of the hypotheses and technique used they may predict the results of unobserved experimental phenomena; and, in many instances, they provide quantities which are necessary for the interpretation of experimental data but which cannot be directly measured."
