This is the floor plan of how the proposed underground cafeteria-auditorium to be constructed between the two new office buildings would be converted into an emeregency state capitol and Civil defense Operations center. The upper portion shows the cafeteria partitioned into state offices. The administrative center adjoins a message center and switchboard area would be kept in constant readiness, even during peacetime. The auditorium would convert to a conference or briefing room and the state CD operations center. A decontamination center is shown on the right. Tunnels leading to the other two buildings would become sleeping quarters. Blast-proof doors to the surface are located at the upper and lower portions of the drawing, prepared by Hudgins, Thompson, Bll & Associates; and Baily, Bozalis, dickinson and Roloff."

Gaylord of Oklahoma City - was made at a price of $5,200 and acre less than the average cost of 71.35 acres previously bought by the city for the south "clear" zone. Injection of the purchase from Gaylord into the city council election race in Ward 4 led to a check of official records. These records disclosed the 71.35 acres bought for the south clear zone actually cost $155,638 more than 160 acres purchased from Gaylord dor the north clear zone. $2,500 an Acre The two tracts were purchased to assure clear zones on each side of the city airport, and an extension of the sorth-south runway was made possible by the sale of the Gaylord land. The $400,000 price paid to Gaylord was at the rate of $2,500 an acre. This price was set by thre recognized real estate appraisers appointed by the city, R. J. Spradling, Harold Brand and Roscoe Sears......Sixteen of the property owners declined to sell at the city appraisers' prices, requiring the city to acquire their land through court …

Jodie Moad, Cheyenne, who turned the picture in for Billy, said the boy three blocks home to get his camera and snap the twister. Moad said the twister turned away, after heading toward Cheyenne, and only destroyed a hay-barn. This spectacular shot of a perfect funnel shows debris being tossed about 50 feet in the air alongside the swirling tip. Moad estimated height of the column at 175 yards. The test paved the way for an astronaut to ride a space capsule to the fringe of space, possibly next month. It was the third straight successful test in the Project Mercury program to orbit a man-carrying satellite in space. if things continue to go well, that may come by the end of the year. But Russia, which launched the first satellite and scored another major breakthrough with its Venus shot, is likely to orbit man before we do."

Brown's downtown store here Saturday morning as others, many of them from out of town, paraded in 30 cars down W main. The kneeling youth repeatedly had been warned earlier by their leaders not to block aisles or entranceways during their demonstration at Brown's luncheonette. The warning came from E. Melvin Porter, local Association for the Advancement of Colored People, in a meeting at the Calvary Baptist Church, NE 2 and Walnut, just before the group marched downtown............Saturday's mobilized domonstrators said they tried earlier this week to get a permit for Saturday's parade, but were refused. Against City Policy Sheldon Stirling, city manager, said the permit was not issued because it is against city policy to issue such a permit to an individual. The permit was requested by Gene Matthews, attorney and Village councilman. Matthews led Saturday's parade. Bill Clifford, president of the Young Christian Worker's local region, said another rquest was made by his organization and the Oklahoma Cityans for Human Rights Friday afternoon. Another $776,719.05 bill also will be forthcoming from the highway department in the near future. On urban roads, the city is required to pay the total right of way cost. Construction costs are divided 50-50 between the state and federal government.........However, the commission agreed to proceed with the acquistion of right of way on the central (crosstown) expressway "inasmuch as land value in the immediate area is rapidly increasing and a delay in the acquisition would result in higher cost of right of way" (Map shows Oklahoma City's expressways - present and planned. Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "Where was the first highway through present day Oklahoma? Research in the Oklahoma Highway Department by Roger M. Taylor, veteran highway department employe, indicates that the Grand Chemin de Sante Fe, that traversed the lands just north of the Red River, qualified as the oldest of the record. The route if that road thrived in the spectacular days of Spanish rule is shown below. Who blazed the route is unknown. It could have been either of the conquistadors Don Facunda Malgares or Don Del Castello along about 1650 when they spent several years on the western part of what is now Oklahoma. Then, too, it could have been a group of priests who detached themselves form Coronado's expedition in 1541 and led by Franciscan Father, Juan de Padilla, spread into the Wichita Indian domain to carry Christianity into the grass huts......It had a population of 3,000 persons, 10,000 horses and hundreds of carretas or wooden wheeled carts. The road was primarily used to haul gold and silver from Old Mexico by way of Santa Fe."
