Numerous branches and trees came down in Bethany as violent storms ripped roofs off several homes in the extreme northwest section of the city. Listeners didn't talk much while the boys sang, but the truck moved on each time, preceeded by a police car with sirens open, the exclamations were many. "Weren't their voices sweet?" Phelps, construction contractor, who plans to convert the long-time landmark into a downtown luxury apartment building. The seven-story building, owned by Mutual Savings & Loans Association, was bought by George E. Phelps, Inc., a newly organized firm, headed by Phelps. Phelps said his plans to spend $500,000 converting the building into an 80-unit apartment building. The remodeling program is to start immediately. Limited occupancy is expected within 90 days on the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors, Phelps said. It will be two or three months before the second, third and seventh floors are ready. Single rooms will rent for about $130 a month, Phelps said. A single-room efficency apartment will rent from $175 to $200 a month, and luxury class apartment will rent for between $400 and $500 a month.Phelps said plans call for converting the first floor into business offices. Consideration is also being given to converting the club's outdoor dance area into a sun deck with swimming pool for tenants. No plans have been made yet for use of the basement. …

The 180 employes were notified at 9 a.m. Friday, ending the story of one of Oklahoma City's oldest retail firms on one of its most famous business sites. Fund Established Edward E. Barksdale, store manager, told employes a $140,000 fund has been established for severance pay, vacation time and operation of an employement office to help them find other jobs.
