Fire Damage to Native Grass

Photograph of a pasture of native grass in excellent condition. Approximately 200 acres of grass and timber was destroyed before this fire was brought under control. Stephens County Civil Defense fire fighting units assisted in extinguishing the fire. Fire started by a careless farmer who was burning a fire break 1/4 mile south of this field.

Inundation Studies

Photograph of water impounding plot constructed by ARS-SWC to study inundation tolerance of selected species of plants associated with watershed treatment (floodwater retarding structures). Water will be 5 feet deep at lower end of plot. Six plots are planned for the study. Reddish Prairie, virgin rangel and Noble Loam, slope 7%, erosion 1, Class LV. Photograph of a view of water impounding Plot 3 as seen from the top of the lower dyke. This plot has been flooded two times previously for 20 days from 3/22/61 to 4/11/61 and again from 5/2/61 to 5/22/61. None to slight damages were noted from the first flooding; however, severe damages and loss of grasses resulted form the second flooding. Water depth vaired from in excess of 6.0' in the foreground to zero in the background. This study is in response to SCS research needs. Work is under the supervision of Edd D. Ther was a slight suppression of growth, however, there was no killing of any part of the grass at this depth. For view of this grass when flooded at the same duratio at a depth of 1.0 foot, see OK-1760-6 dated 6/8/62. This research is under the supervision of Edd D. Rhoades, Agricultural Engineer, ARS-SWC.

Photograph of buffalo grass (in front of sign) in impoundment basin number 6 at a depth of 5.0 feet following two floodings for 20 days during early spring (3/21-4/10/62 and mid-spring (5/2-22/62). Severe suppression of growth with approximately 75 percent of top grwoth killed during mid-spring flooding. All grass at this depth had recovered well at date o photograph. For view of this grass when flooded at same time, except for a depth of 1.0 foot, see Ok-1760-4, dated 6/8/62. This research is under the supervision of Edd D. Rhoades, Agricultural Engineer, ARS-SWC.
