Hilly Stony Savannah on Mt. Pinchot

Photograph of Hilly Stony Savannah on southwest slope of Mt. Pinchot Mountain Escarpment at top is the highest point n the Wichita Mountains. This is thought to be the only area of natural cedar on the refuge. Small open areas are typical of this range site.

Carl K. bates, state capitol improvement and zoning chairman, said a "co-operative arrangement" has been worked out with city officials at allow traffic to continue between NE 23 and NE 24 as long as possible. However, Bates said, the state is buying new traffic signals to go up at Lindsay and Stiles on NE 23 for eventual re-routing of traffing around theat portion of N Lincoln between NE 23 and NE 24....As explained by irvin Hurst, zoning commission chairman, when the two blocks are closed, traffic will be split at NE 24. Southbound traffic will go west a block to Stiles, then south to the new light on NE 23 at the Lindsay light, go north two blocks on Lindsay, then back to Lincoln on NE 24...Bates said traffic signs have been put up to slow vehicles through construction area "to lessen likelihood of accidents, and it seems to be working out all right." Caption: "First of 19 structural steel utility poles 100 feet high was erected Monday by OG&E workmen to carry 138,000-volt high line across the downtown area. The tower line, linking electric company substations at NW 2 and Classen and at SW 5 and Broadway, will repalce at 24,000-volt line. OG&E says that the new system is needed to meet the city's growing electrical needs. The two-foot-square towers are designed to withstand winds of more than 100 miles an hour and are anchored to bed rock 20 feet below the ground."

Caption: "Thirteen racial demonstrators - including a Catholic priest - were arrested on disorderly conduct compliants Saturday after the most determined attempt to gain service at the Anna Maude's Cafeteria. The demonstrators, who sat in the lobby of the Cravens Building when they refused admittance to the cafeteria, were carried to the police patrol wagon when they refused to leave. Police had arrieved with the crowd of 75 demonstrators to maintian order. When the customers complianed that the entrance to the cafeteria was blocked, J. W. Quillian jr., building manager, agreed to sign compliants. All Go To Jail Eight white persons were taken to jail. They were Rev. Robert G. McDole, 1005 NE 15, assistant pastor of Corpus Chrisiti Roman Catholic Church; William Roy Kirkwood, 20, a student at the University of Oklahoma; Benny Paul VanMeter, 20, of 2537 NW 21; and Bill James Clifford, 24, of 901 NW 21. The other white persons were Ross Joseph Williams, 28, of 515 SW 27; Thomas William Braden, 19, od 515 SW 27; Nellie Ruth Zoeller, 20, of 928 SW 26; Doris Marie Manning, 18, of 1016 SW 28. The Negroes jailed …
