Photograph used for a story in the Oklahoma City Times newspaper. Caption: "If Oklahomans are lucky, they'll be able to start using one, of their "Christmas presents" around sometime around Easter. The "present" is the north end of the Raymond Gary expressway, dedicated in impressive ceremonies before Christmas. The former governor called it a present to the people of Oklahoma. Having opened it up, the state then boxed the package back up, tied the ribbons and stashed it under the tree again, tagged with a do-not-open sign. Not Accepted At all entrances to the supposedly open expressway, motorists find braces of barricades suggesting alternate routes. "Of course it isn't opened," said highway commission engineer Dick Burton, "it wasn't accepted by the commission when it was dedicated, and it hasn't been acccepted now." When reminded of the dedication ceremony, the unveiling of all the nice plaques, and the official caravan which traveled the road from start to finish, the engineer showed no suprise."

Photograph used for a story in the Oklahoma City Times newspaper. Caption: "Two men died in the splintering crash of a light plane near Yukon late Tuesday morning while the family of one of the victims watched from the ground. Killed instantly was Gerald Miller, 34, of 136 Leonard lane, Midwest City, a Tinker Air Force base employe. Robert Norfleet, 27, of 2609 SW 48, died shortly after arriving at Baptist Memorial hospital from injuries suffered in the crash. A Tinker spokesman said the aircraft was a Piper Club PA-18, owned by the Tinker Aero Club. The light aircraft, with tandem seating for two, was demolished. The impact crushed the fuselage to less than 24 inches in thickness. Sanford Miller, father of Gerald Miller, and a younger brother, Gordon, were witnesses to the crash. The younger Miller, 19, was making movies of the plane's take-off when it plunged into a plowed field. The elder Miller, in a 'state of shock, told this story to newsmen: "They had flown in to visit the family. The plane hardly got into the air when she came crashing down.......Highway patrol trooper Ralph Morganb said it wasn't determinded which of the victims was piloting the …

Photograph used for a story in the Oklahoma City Times newspaper. Caption: "If you live east of the Raymond Gary expressway, you probably have to chug over a detour to get to Oklahoma City. All down the eastside bypass, construction is under way that has disrupted traffic in some way or the other on every major artery except 23. Latest street close down is NE 10. Expressway builders held off as long as possible on this construction, so a convenient detour would be available, before shutting down a stretch of street. The convenient detour turns out to be NE 16. There, a slick bridge spans a yawning concrete canyon that is one of the most impressive sights on the bypass system......Other detour action completely shuts off a bridge that once was the only way to get into town from the southeast. it is the famous (or notorious, depending on your point of view) Byars avenue bridge. Persons used to driving this bridge won't object to the work being down, however, since it'll give the bridge four lane approaches on both ends, at long last......Reno still has the darned-near permanent detour that takes motorists on a happy drive around the countryside, …
