Gamma Rays from Inelastic Scattering of 14-Mev Neutrons on Pb²⁰⁸

Abstract: "The cross section for the production of 2.61-Mev gamma rays from the Pb-208(n, n')Pb-208* reaction has been measured for five different angles from 50 to 130 degrees. The angular distribution appears to be isotropic within the precision of the experiments, and leads to an integrated cross section of 25.5 +/- 4.6 millibarns."

Electron-Population Analysis and the Dipole Moment of the LiH ¹Σ⁺ Excited State / A.M. Karo (open access)

Electron-Population Analysis and the Dipole Moment of the LiH ¹Σ⁺ Excited State / A.M. Karo

Abstract: "Detailed consideration is given to some properties of the first excited electronic state. Following the analysis proposed bv Mulliken, SCF LCAO-MO coefficients are used to obtain qualitative information about the electron distributions. Comparison is made with earlier work with respect to the description of the excited-state dipole moment, the effective electric moment between the ground and excited states is also calculated. From this, the oscillator strength for the first allowed transition is computed as a function of the internuclear distance."

Transistor Driven Beam Switching Tube Decade Counter

Abstract: "This paper describes an electrical readout, decade counter employing the magnetron beam switching tube with transistor drive. Double pulse resolution is one microsecond. The unit will accept a variety of transistor types and will tolerate supply voltage variations of +/- 20% at ambient temperatures up to 60 C. A "Pixie" neon indicator is driven without the use of additional transistors. A readout circuit for printer on punched paper tape is presented."

The Ratio of Alpha to Beta Activity of Natural Atmospheric Radioactivity (open access)

The Ratio of Alpha to Beta Activity of Natural Atmospheric Radioactivity

Abstract: The alpha to beta ratio of naturally occurring radioactivity in the air has been investigated. The study has concerned itself primarily with radon daughter products collected on filter-paper samples from the time equilibrium has been established on the paper through elapsed times during which radioactive counting is normally accomplished. Calculations showing the change in this ratio of activities during the above period are presented. From this work it appears that the observed constancy of ratio does have theoretical justification and that departures in alpha-to-beta ratio would be a usable approach to the detection of long-lived alpha or beta radioisotopes in the atmosphere.

Hydromagnetic Stability of a Diffuse Linear Pinch (open access)

Hydromagnetic Stability of a Diffuse Linear Pinch

Abstract: "The hydromagnetic energy principle is applied to the derivation of necessary and sufficient conditions for the hydromagnetic stability of a linear pinch with distributed plasma current (a diffuse linear pinch). The results are quite general in that the axial and azimuthal components of the magnetic field, which determines the structure of the pinch completely, are treated as arbitrary functions of distance from the axis. For purpose of illustration, the general results are applied to the limiting case of a pinch with the plasma current confined to an infinity thin layer (a sharp pinch)."

The Satellite Code: A Numerical Satellite Integration Program for the IBM 704

From Introduction: "This report is intended as a handbook for the users of the Satellite code which was developed as a general purpose satellite and space probe program. The components of acceleration, in a three-dimensional rectangular coordinate system, are integrated to produce the velocities and coordinates. These may be transformed into elliptical elements at each time step. The output, therefore, may resemble an integration in the coordinates as well as in the parameters."
