An Investigation of Methods for the Concentration of Chemical Compounds Produced by Actinomycetes and Their Relation to Tastes and Odors in Municipal Water Supplies (open access)

An Investigation of Methods for the Concentration of Chemical Compounds Produced by Actinomycetes and Their Relation to Tastes and Odors in Municipal Water Supplies

It is the purpose of this investigation to improve upon techniques to enhance the taste of municipal water and attempt to devise one that could desorb the compounds from carbon in an unaltered state. It was decided that the odor character would be the criterion used to decide if the eluted compounds were the same as those in the raw water.

A Technique for the Mass Culture of Aquatic Actinomycetes (open access)

A Technique for the Mass Culture of Aquatic Actinomycetes

The purpose of the problem was to develop a laboratory technique for mass culturing of the aquatic actinomycetes. In order to solve the problem, it was necessary to devise a suitable culture chamber that would nurture the various species in both primary and secondary stages. It was also important to provide an adequate medium for growth of these organisms. Finally, the construction of the culture chambers must provide for a continuous exhaust of the taste and odor compounds so that the production of these components could be correlated with growth stages.

Studies on the Nutrition of Rhodospirillum Rubrum (open access)

Studies on the Nutrition of Rhodospirillum Rubrum

The purpose of this study has been to examine the nutritional requirements of Rhodospirillum rubrum and, on the basis of the results, develop a culture medium which could be use to promote more rapid and abundant growth facilitating the laboratory cultivation and observations of the properties so exhibited.

Effects of Antigen Injection on Titer of C'3 and C'4 Complement Components of Rat Serum (open access)

Effects of Antigen Injection on Titer of C'3 and C'4 Complement Components of Rat Serum

This work attempts to establish some phenomenon of a rise in titer of C'3 and C'4 due to antigenic stimulation. Normal level of complement is established and compared to other workers as well as against guinea pig levels. Young rats were bled to establish normal levels of complement. The animals were then injected with an antigenic substance and after a period of seven days were bled again to determine the level of complement. Various antigenic and non-antigenic substances were used as well as normal saline injections for control.

A Study of the Role of Complement in the Protection of Akr Mice Against Transplanted Lymphoid Leukemia (open access)

A Study of the Role of Complement in the Protection of Akr Mice Against Transplanted Lymphoid Leukemia

It seemed desirable to investigate further the possible role of complement and its components in the protective action of serum against transplanted neoplasms. It is the purpose of this thesis to present data which suggest that the C'4 component plays an active part in this process though the mechanism is not disclosed.

Changes which Occur in Components C'3 and C'4 in Guinea Pig Complement after Injection of an Antigen (open access)

Changes which Occur in Components C'3 and C'4 in Guinea Pig Complement after Injection of an Antigen

This thesis describes an experiment involving guinea pigs' blood and the changes that occurred in the serum with the injection of an antigen. The serum was analyzed in complement titration tests.

A Study of a Selected Group of Science Related Characteristics of Non-Science Majors (open access)

A Study of a Selected Group of Science Related Characteristics of Non-Science Majors

The purpose of this study is to gather information related to the characteristics of two groups of undergraduate non-science majors; namely, those students who once considered science as a career and subsequently changed to a non-science major and those who have never considered a career in science. It is frequently observed that children in the elementary school have an intense interest in science. One of the principal concerns of this study is how and for what reasons has the interest in science changed between elementary school and college? It is also the purpose of this study to gather information related to the attitudes of these college students toward the science courses they have had in high school and toward their science teachers. In attempting to arrive at an answer, the group who once considered a science career and those who have never considered an occupational choice in a field of science will be compared in the following areas: 1. General information such as sex, age, size of high school attended, rank within their graduating classes, college classification and military experiences. 2. Occupations and hobbies of parents. 3. Experiences which may influence attitudes toward science such as elementary school science, high …

A Vegetative Key to the Conspicuous Flowering Herbs of Denton County, Texas (open access)

A Vegetative Key to the Conspicuous Flowering Herbs of Denton County, Texas

"The area of study was restricted to those common flowering herbs of Denton County, Texas, which have conspicuous flowers or a conspicuous flower cluster. There were, however, many plants included in this flora which are common to several counties of north-central Texas. Since there has been no previous key devised for the herbs of Denton County, Texas, the purpose of this key was to provide a flora which could be used by elementary and high school instructors, as well as any other interested persons who lack an extensive knowledge of botanical nomenclature." -- leaf iv.
