Elastic Solution for the Thermal Stresses in a Finite Solid Cylinder Fuel Element

The heat generated by reactor fuel elements create thermal gradiants which cause thermal stresses of considerable magnitude. An elastic solution for these thermal stresses can be calculated with the equations given in Timoshenko's and Goodier's book (1) on elasticity if the fuel element is assumed infinite in length. An exact elastic solution for a finite cylindrical fuel element is given in this report in order to evaluate the effects of fuel element length on the thermal stresses and the effects of having the free end material distorting the end closure.

A Summary of the History of Hanford Redox Plant Solvent

The Redox solvent extraction process for the separation of uranium and plutonium from their fission products and from each other has operated on an over-all basis very successfully for more than four and one-half years. During this time, there have been occasional periods of high product losses and/or poor separation of fission products from uranium or plutonium as well as periods of poor operability due, among other things, to emulsification and entrainment. The search for the cause of these various process troubles has resulted in almost continuous testing of the process solvent in attempting to determine its contribution, if any, to these difficulties. This report documents the history of the Redox Plant solvent.

Note on Power Recovery From Warm Water

Several studies of power recovery from Hanford pile effluents have been made, from which the conclusion can be drawn that, while recovery of power is feasible, it is costly because of the large volume of vapor which must be handled per kilowatt-hour of energy provided. This note is to call attention to the possibility of developing cheaper machinery than the conventional low-pressure turbine stages considered in previous studies through use of a water expansion cycle.

Centrifugal Casting for Plutonium and Plutonium-Uranium Plates

The objective of this investigation was to determine the feasibility of centrifugal casting to produce fuel element plates suitable for use in a power reactor. Preliminary investigations involving the centrifugal casting of metal plates suitable for use in a power reactor proved to be successful. Lead plates cast at medium speeds contained very few voids and exhibited a surface which conformed very closely to that of the mold.

Hanford Use of Experimental Water Filter Plant

An improved method of water plant control has been developed at Hanford which employs a sensitive turbidiy measuring microphorometer and a model water filtration plant. The microphotometer operates on a light scattering principle and is accurate in the range of 0.0 to 0.1 parts per million turbidity. The model filter plant used is a five gallon per minute plant which can simulate the conditions normally occurring in the large water plants. It is the purpose of this report to describe the model filter plant and to demonstrate the value of the model and microphotometer for effective water plant control and water plant design scoping.

Preliminary Demonstration of D₂O Moderated Demonatration Reactor

The objective of this report is to analyze the basic engineering problems involved in the design of a pressurized demonatration reactor to be moderated and cooled with heavy water. Two fundamental concepts of this reactor, here referred to as the HWER, are as follows: (1) a tank-type reactor, in which the moderator pressure is maintained at or near atmospheric conditions, and (2) a pressurized vessel-type reactor in which the moderator pressure is maintained at 1000 to 1300 psi. The fuel and primary coolant channels in either case will be designed for an internal pressure pressure of 1000 to 13000 psi.

Alternating Current and Square-Wave Polarography

A exploratory study was made of a polarographic technique in which an alternating sine or square-wave potential is superimposed upon the applied d.c. potential of the polarographic scan. Recording of the a.c. component of the polarographic current results in derivative-type waves. It was shown that the technique yields greater sensitivity and greater selectivity than normal polarographic technique.

Graphite Diffusion Length Measurements at Hanford

A series of diffusion length measurements were carried out on graphite stacks of various constructions in an attempt to resolve the discrepancies between the graphite diffusion lengths measured in the Hanford reactors and that value measured in the Hanford Standard Pile. It was found that the diffusion length of the graphite in the Hanford reactors is in good agreement with the value for the Hanford Standard Pile when corrections are made for the absorption and scattering of neutrons by the aluminum process tubes, and for neutrons streaming in the channels of the reactors.

The Creep of Zircaloy-2 Process Tubes

The creep problems associated with zircaloy-2 process tubes and the factors affecting the creep of these tubes were discussed in detail. Emphasis was placed on the determination of the tube wall thickness for an SPR tube, whose minimum thickness is limited by creep considerations. It was concluded that, at the present time, there is not enough information available to design zircaloy-2 process tubes on a realistic basis. Various experiments were suggested to supplement the creep rate testing program being pursued by Battelle Memorial Institute.

Ultrasonic Testing With Lamb Waves

A method is described whereby many types of flaws lying close to the surface of a metal can be ultrasonically detected, regardless of the time duration of the interrogating pulses. Lamb waves are established in the metal between a flaw and the surface by an ultrasonic beam which impinges at the proper angle of incidence. A suitably positioned receiver transducer picks up the waves to reveal the flaw. In this method the usually troublesome surface echo is eliminated from the receiver by an acoustic barrier, making it well suited for routine and automatic testing. Results of applying the technique to several testing problems are discussed.

The Reactivity Value of Highly Burned Plutonium in Thermal Reactors

It has been suggested by many workers in the power reactor field that a more efficient utilization of natural uranium may be obtained in thermal reactors if the Pu produced in a fuel cycle were used to enrich a subsequent cycle in which the irradiation-depleted-uranium would be reirradiated. The work described here was done for the purpose of evaluating the reactivity value of the Pu enrichment under the assumption that all plutonium produced is, after chemical separation, fabricated into separate fuel elements and not alloyed with recycled uranium. It has been suggested that the reactivity value of the Pu decreases with exposure to such an extent that highly burned plutonium should be discarded. We, therefore, wish to look at two of the variables affecting the limiting exposure: the reactivity value of the fuel as a function of exposure and temperature and the fraction of potential fissions which would be discarded as a function of exposure. Though the residence time of the Pu fuel before reprocessing, refabrication, and recycling depends upon the relative decrease in specific power, decrease in reactivity due to fission product build-up, the lifetime of the fuel elements before failure, and the cost of reprocessing, only the first …

Safe Conditions For Applying Titanium In H.A.P.O Process Equipment

A two and one-half year period of extreme caution where titanium and nitric acid are involved has passed since the occurrence of the last and most serious uncontrolled incident involving titanium and nitric acid. During this period controlled explosions involving titanium and nitric acid have been routinely reproduced, additional laboratory and pilot plant experience has been gained and successful industrial applications have been appraised. Based on laboratory data and the known industrial experiences, it is concluded that titanium can be safely employed in systems handling nitric acid that contains more than two (2) percent water. It is recommended that the titanium heat exchanger recently fabricated by the Technical Shops be installed in the Purex Plant plutonium concentrator when replacement of the stainless steel unit now in service becomes necessary.

Hydrogen peroxide has been used to reduce plutonium (VI) in nitric acid solution to the (IV) valence state. However, reduction of plutonium (VI) solutions containing iron has often been incomplete when hydrogen peroxide was used as the reducing agent. Since reduction of plutonium (VI) has been applied in plant solutions containing iron, a study of the plutonium (VI) reduction with hydrogen peroxide was undertaken. Variables tested included plutonium, nitric acid, and iron concentrations.

Organic Continuous Cartridge for the Purex 2D Column

This document covers work done in 3- and 4-inch-diameter glass columns directed toward the development of improved cartridges for the Purex Plant final uranium cycle extraction column, the 2D column. A nozzle plate cartridge for the extraction section and a mixed plate cartridge containing both stainless steel and fluorothene sieve plates for the scrub section were developed. In 3- and 4-inch-diameter glass columns these cartridges have a uranium extraction efficiency as good as or better than the present cartridge; and a scrubbing efficiency, based on the transfer of chloride ion, about the same as the present cartridge.

Trip Rerport Organic Reactor Collant Survey

A preliminary report has shown the potential importance of organic reactor coolants to Hanford technology. The salient points are complete avoidance of corrosion problems and accomplishment of DPR performance with low pressure technique. The recommendation of the report that loop tests be made at Hanford is to be acted upon by Recirculation Technology Unit as soon as organic coolant material is received. To insure starting this experimental work fully abreast of the information available, a trip to sites working with organic coolants was made. Specifically, data were sought on practical details of design for handling organic coolants, heat transfer and fouling characteristics, corrosion of materials, and hazards of handling organics.
