Drag Measurements at Low Lift of a Four-Nacelle Airplane Configuration Having a Longitudinal Distribution of Cross-Sectional Area Conductive to Low Transonic Drag Rise

Memorandum presenting a procedure based on the transonic area rule, which has been used to design a four-nacelle delta-wing airplane configuration. A flight test of a model of the configuration showed a zero-lift transonic drag rise of 0.010 which, when compared with estimates, indicated the absence of adverse interference effects.

Investigation of Blade Failures in a J34, Eleven-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor

Report presenting a vibrational survey conducted during normal operation of a production eleven-stage axial-flow compressor powered as part of a complete turbojet engine. After serious third-stage vibration was detected, an investigation was conducted to study and eliminate the vibration with several component configurations. The vibrational source was determined to be an aerodynamic phenomenon related to a stall, but a new inlet-guide-vane assembly with a 4-percent increase in inlet area eliminated the vibration and increased the engine thrust 4 percent.

A flight investigation of the effect of leading-edge camber on the aerodynamic characteristics of a swept-wing airplane (open access)

A flight investigation of the effect of leading-edge camber on the aerodynamic characteristics of a swept-wing airplane

Report presenting flight measurements on a swept-wing jet aircraft to determine the effects of adding forward camber and an increased leading-edge radius on the low-speed stalling characteristics, the high-speed static longitudinal stability, and the airplane drag. The modified leading edge produced values of maximum lift somewhat greater than the slats on a normal airplane, but the stall was unacceptable because of an abrupt roll-off.

Report discussing a flight test of a four-nacelle delta-wing airplane configuration based on the transonic area rule in order to counteract the effects of high pressure drag at transonic and supersonic speeds. The testing verified that the transonic area rule can make designing complex aircraft with low transonic and supersonic pressure drag much easier.

A wind-tunnel investigation of the aerodynamic characteristics of a full-scale supersonic-type three-blade propeller at Mach numbers to 0.96 (open access)

A wind-tunnel investigation of the aerodynamic characteristics of a full-scale supersonic-type three-blade propeller at Mach numbers to 0.96

From Summary: "An investigation of the characteristics of a full-scale supersonic-type propeller has been made in the Langley 16-foot transonic tunnel with the 6000-horsepower propeller dynamometer. The tests covered a range of blade angles from 20.2 degrees to 60.2 degrees at forward Mach numbers up to 0.96. The results showed that envelope efficiency at an advance ratio of 2.8 decreased from 86 percent to 72 percent when the forward Mach number was increased from 0.70 to 0.96."
