By means of measurements with a double ionization chamber, the average fission cross section of U238 for neutrons from the fission of U235 was determined in terms of v, the average number of neutrons per fission of U235. the number of fission of U238 was measured in one of the ionization chambers while the number of fissions from the fission neutron source of U235 was measured in the other chamber. In the nine runs made to determine the cross section, a variety of different methods was used to determine the number of fissions and the mass of U238.

Bismuth metal was irradiated with 340 Mev protons in the circulating beam of the 184-inch Berkeley cyclotron. Nuclides formed as fission products during the course of the bombardment were separated and studied through the use of radiochemical techniques.

This report is one of a series of five, dealing with alloys of the uranium-zirconium series. Particularly, this report focuses on the corrosion properties of uranium alloys, with zirconium as the major alloying agent, in high-temperature water.

From abstract: "The preceding article describes the preparation of a number of alkali carbonates of pentavalent neptunium, plutonium, or americium. The results of x-ray diffraction studies of some of these carbonate precipitates are presented in the present paper. The preparations to be dealt with are the K-Pu(V) (at low pH), NH4-Pu(V) and Rb-Am(V) precipitates which form one iso-structural series. In the case of the other preparations discussed in the preceding article, the x-ray work did not lead to reliable conclusions as to chemical formula and crystal structure."

"In the course of an ultracentrifugal investigation of uranyl fluoride solutions, their densities and refractive indices were measured as a function of concentration. The measurements were carried out near 25 and 30 C and if necessary extrapolated to 25.0 and 30.0 C from the observed temperature coefficients. Most density data were obtained pycnometrically (25 cc samples) and a few gradient tubes. The refractive index measurements were carried out with a Bausch and Lomb dipping refractometer (calibrated with "known" solutions) using sodium-D light. The materials used and the analytical procedures were described earlier. Although the accuracy of the density measurements was approximately one part in 10,000, the accuracy of the determinations at high UO2F2 concentration is considerably less, in view of the uncertainty in the uranium analyses."

The following report describes and experimental method used to determine equation of state of materials under strong shock. The method was devised of simultaneously measuring the velocity of the shock through a plate, and the velocity of the free surface after the shock has traversed the plate. Further analysis is presented.

Abstract: "An appropriate method has been applied to predict fast neutron dosimeter data from thermal neutron measurements. Results are compared with actual dosimeter data and it is concluded that the method presented gives a good approximation for fast neutron dose. This is important since in many previous experiments fast neutron dosimeter data had not been taken, but thermal neutron data had been obtained."

The report further discusses the crystal structure, lattice parameters, number of molecules per unit cell, space group, and atomic positions for the compound.

By heating the normally cool areas of graphite to temperatures of 200°C or higher, it is evident that a substantial portion of the energy stored will be released. The physical dimension change which is associated with the radiation damage of graphite has been noted to partially recover under laboratory conditions when this amount of stored energy is released. This latter phenomenon is of prime interest in this operation. If a dimension recovery is noted on the gross structure, a solution to certain formidable operating problems may have been achieved.

The rotary rain indicator, an electrical device for recording the time of beginning and ending of periods of precipitation, was developed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Meteorology Group and has operated successfully for eight months. Its sensitive element consists of a rotating grid whose circuit may be completed by a drop of water.

Abstract: "Atmospheric diffusion and microclimate studies at Savannah River are reported. A new simple method was developed enabling operating personnel to establish the downwind concentration and dispersion pattern of materials released from stacks. A statistical study of atmospheric temperature inversions was made because of the influence on atmospheric diffusion. The microclimate of the plant site is compared with Augusta."

"Hydrodynamic theory predicts that if a shock wave in a metal is not too strong it will separate into two waves." This report discusses a modification of the contactor technique to determine the velocities of the two waves simultaneously for samples of steel and tungsten alloy.
