The downwash and water surface profiles were measured behind the hydrofoil for a variety of positions of interest. Results regarding surface contours, a comparison of surface profiles with theoretical two-dimensional waves, and downwash are presented.

Performance Characteristics of a Double-Cylindrical-Shroud Ejector Nozzle

Memorandum presenting an investigation of the performance characteristics of a double-shroud ejector for the purpose of evaluating its effectiveness as an exit nozzle. Calculations based on ejector performance data, taken with the ejector discharging into quiescent air, indicate that thrust performance on the order of ideal nozzle thrust may be obtained over a Mach number range of 0.8 to 2.3 from a double-shroud ejector. The results of a simplified theoretical analysis are in fair agreement with those experimentally obtained.

Report presenting an experimental investigation in the free-flight tunnel to determine the low-speed stability and control characteristics of a model with a fuselage of relatively flat cross section. The model was found to exhibit an erratic behavior in pitch and yaw, which appeared to be due to random trim changes associated with the flow from the forward portion of the flat fuselage. Results regarding the longitudinal stability and control characteristics and lateral stability and control characteristics are provided.

Formation of Nitrogen Oxides by Alpha Particle Irradiation of the System N₂-CO₂

Abstract: "The reaction between nitrogen and carbon dioxide, under irradiation with 40 Mev alpha particles from the Berkeley 60 inch cyclotron, was studied at gas temperatures near 50 C and total pressures of about 600 millimeters of Hg, contained in Pyrex capsules. The range of gas compositions investigated included the pure components, as well as mixtures with and without trace oxygen. In all mixtures, a steady state concentration of nitrogen oxides of about 0.15 millimeter was reached after a few microampere hours exposure. The mass-spectrometer analytical procedure employed did not permit identification of the individual species of oxides present. This report is based on studies conducted for the Atomic Energy Commission under Contract AT-11-1-GEN-8."

Uranium alloys containing 3 and 6 w/o niobium have been prepared in which the impurity content is rather low. These alloys show very promising resistance to corrosion by water at 260 and 300 degree C. The corrosion resistance is exhibited in degassed water and in water which is saturated with air or oxygen at room temperature before testing.

Comparative Analysis of ANL High Purity Uranium

In the course of the development at Argonne of high purity uranium metal in ingot form, some questions arose as to the validity of the chemical analyses of some of the impurities (particularly those for carbon, boron, and silicon), with one analytical laboratory reporting concentrations in some instances of an order of magnitude greater than another laboratory. Since the low concentrations of impurities in this material involved, in some cases, the development of modified analytical procedures and standards, it was decided to check these discrepancies by having identically prepared samples analyzed by several AEC and associated laboratories. This report is a compilation of the results obtained.

Physical Properties of Nickel Carbonyl

The vapor pressure of nickel carbonyl was determined with material obtained by laboratory preparation with CO and Ni powder and by purifying commercial nickel carbonyl. The observed vapor pressure data were used in the derivation of the following equations which express the vapor pressure, P, of liquid nickel carbonyl and the sublimation pressure, P/sub s/, of the solid, respectively, as a function of the absolute temperature, T: log P = 7.88431578/T and log P/sub s/ 10.1897-2173/T. The average heat of vaporization is calculated to be 7.22 plus or minus 0.01 kcal per mole and the molecular heat of sublimation of Ni(CO)/sub 4/ is 9.94 plus or minus 0.11 kcal. Extrapolation to 760 mm Hg gives a boiling point of 42.2 deg C. The melting point of purified nickel carbonyl occurred at -17.2 deg C. The sensitivity of the melting point to the effect of impurities was demonstrated with commercial nickel carbonyl which melted at-19.4 deg C before purification, at --18.3 deg C after distillations at 0 deg C, and at -17.2 deg C after sublimation at -25 deg C. We have to consider the process of slowing down, and the nature of the trail of ions produced. Very slow particles are of little interest, as their range is very short. If Z is large, or if the particle is an electron, there are complications which we postpone. Thus, our considerations will apply particularly to protons, deuterons, o< -particles, and mesons.

Calculation of Average Flux in Moderator of Water Lattices by Means of a Relaxation Method

The following report concerns the application of a relaxation mesh method for the determination of the average flux within the moderator of a light water moderated, 1.027 per cent U-235, hexagonal lattice with a volume ratio (V_H2O + V_Al)/V_Uranium of 4:1. It was hoped that the calculation would enable one to determine any differences in flux which might result from the fact that the unit cell is a hexagon instead of a cylinder. Because we were primarily interested in the effect due to geometry we applied the same theory, diffusion theory, to the hexagon by means of the mesh method and to the equivalent cylinder.

The Cosmotron Radio Frequency Accelerating System

The proton beam in the Cosmotron is accelerated to an energy of 2.3 billion electron volts by a radio frequency voltage which is impressed across an insulated gap in the ferrite loaded accelerating cavity of the vacuum chamber. To maintain a constant orbit radius as the beam is accelerated, the frequency of the accelerating voltage must increase from the initial value of 370 kc/sec to 4200 kc/sec during the one second magnet pulse. Over the entire 11:1 frequency range, a minimum gap voltage of 2000 volts rms must be maintained. At every instant throughout the magnet pulse, the frequency of this voltage must be a predetermined function of the magnet field to a high degree of accuracy. Frequency errors greater than about .2 percent result in loss of beam due to excessive radius changes. Smaller errors than this however, can excite fatal phase oscillations in the beam if they occur rapidly. As little as .005 percent frequency modulation can result in total beam loss if it occurs at a rate of several kc/sec, where the beam is most sensitive to such disturbances.
