His work was destined to be influenced by the echoes of the Civil War, the immigration of both Americans and foreigners to a fertile, grain-producing country, and by all the problems of adjustment that faced this agrarian society.

Some Morphological Aspects of the Speech of Cooke County, Texas (open access)

Some Morphological Aspects of the Speech of Cooke County, Texas

A survey of language in a certain area is designed primarily to present a living language as it is actually spoken; thus, a morphological study of language is designed to determine the most widely-used syntactical and grammatical forms and to record these forms in a statistical manner. These findings are to be interpreted in the light of similar studies, not with the purpose of establishing the cultural level of the language in the area surveyed, but to present all the possible variations, and, in some cases, to draw a comparison as a matter of record between the forms found to be commonly used in every-day speech and the standard usage as given by leading linguistic authorities.

The Relationship Between Answers on Individual Items of the California Test of Personality and Position and in the Group as Measured by the North Texas Sociometric Scale

First of all an attempt is made to determine whether or not the individual items on the California Test of Personality will successfully differentiate between persons of low and high peer acceptance. Secondly, research of this nature would establish a basis for construction of a self-rating test which would measure peer acceptance, or at least measure traits which presumably make for peer acceptance, in situations where it would not be possible to administer the regular sociometric scales.

Hydantoins as Anticonvulsants. III. 5-Alkoxy- and Aryloxymethyl-5-(2-Thienyl) Hydantoins

It has been shown in the case of a compound synthesized in this laboratory that substitution of the thienyl group for one of the phenyl groups in diphenyl hydantoin produces a compound with less toxicity and somewhat greater activity. It was considered of interest to carry out an analogous substitution in the series of 5-phenyl-5-alkoxymethylhydantions.
