Calibration Tests of a Japanese Log Rodmeter (open access)

Calibration Tests of a Japanese Log Rodmeter

A Japanese log rodmeter of the rotating-vane impeller type, with a commutator on the impeller shaft, was calibrated in Langley tank no. 1. The rotational speed of two impellers was determined for forward speeds up to 24 knots at angles of yaw up to ?10 0 . In general, the rotational speeds of two apparently identical impellers tested in the rodmeter decreased with increasing yaw angle, right yaw causing a greater decrease than left yaw. The difference in calibration between the two impellers was approximately the same as that produced by a change in yaw angle from 50 left to 50 right. Evidence of cavitation within the impeller fairing appeared at speeds above 24 knots.

Determining Load Correction and Correcting Frequency Compensated Constant Voltage (FCCV) Sola Transformers (open access)

Determining Load Correction and Correcting Frequency Compensated Constant Voltage (FCCV) Sola Transformers

By test duplicating actual operating conditions the average load was found to have a power factor of 95 percent and to be about 75 percent rated load. Since the Sola transformers must be operating into a load having a power factor of 90 percent and about 85 percent rated to attain proper output voltage, power factor corrective networks consisting of inductance and resistance in series were paralleled with the load. When these networks were added, the desired output voltage was attained. Several units have been successfully correction be used on the remaining units.

Effect of Air Cooling of Turbine Disk on Power and Efficiency of Turbine from Turbo Engineering Corporation TT13-18 Turbosupercharger (open access)

Effect of Air Cooling of Turbine Disk on Power and Efficiency of Turbine from Turbo Engineering Corporation TT13-18 Turbosupercharger

"An investigation was conducted to determine the effect of turbine-disk cooling with air on the efficiency and the power output of the radial-flow turbine from the Turbo Engineering Corporation TT13-18 turbosupercharger. The turbine was operated at a constant range of ratios of turbine-inlet total pressure to turbine-outlet static pressure of 1,5 and 2.0, turbine-inlet total pressure of 30 inches mercury absolute, turbine-inlet total temperature of 12000 to 20000 R, and rotor speeds of 6000 to 22,000 rpm, Over the normal operating range of the turbine, varying the corrected cooling-air weight flow from approximately 0,30 to 0.75 pound per second produced no measurable effect on the corrected turbine shaft horsepower or the turbine shaft adiabatic efficiency" (p. 1).

An Electric Thrust Meter Suitable for Flight Investigation of Propellers (open access)

An Electric Thrust Meter Suitable for Flight Investigation of Propellers

A lightweight instrument that utilizes resistance-wire electric strain gases to measure propeller-shaft thrust has been developed. A wind-tunnel investigation on a propeller installed, on a single-engine pursuit airplane showed that the instrument gave a reliable indication of propeller-shaft thrust to an accuracy of +/-2 percent within its calibrated range. No attempt was made to determine the relation of indicated shaft thrust to net propeller thrust.
