The L-shaped tract of land, potentially some of the most desirable homesites in the city, consists of two lakes, trees, and nearly 80 acres of unused ground. The tract is bounded by NW23 on the south and, NW 30 on the north, Villa on the west and Pennsylvania on the east. Once favorite swimming holes of city residents, the two lakes still are favorite fishing spots of small fry to paddle around on homemade rafts."

Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "Charles Burnham Wilkinson is a man of vast importance to Oklahoma the next few months. He is head football coach of the University of Oklahoma, and all the experts seem to agree the Sooners should be something pretty special this autumn. The handsome, 34-year-old Wilkenson isn't agreeing or disagreeing, publicly or privately. He's just working long and hard with his big squad, hoping for the best when the season kicks off in Boston Friday night. But in addition to this, he is busying himselfwith the whole matter of athletics at OU, of which he is director; and with many details of the great stadium expansion program - of which the campus gives dramatic evidence. With all this, Bud Wilkinson is a busy man. For a lot more about him, see pages 14 and 15."

Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "When Oklahomans talk about "scenic beauty," it's mostly about the rugged stretches in the southeast. But southwestern Oklahoma has some beautiful spots, too. The Wichita mountains which stretch west of Lawton almost to Altus are impressively rough and rugged. Moreover, they are dotted with small lakes and threaded with pretty creeks. the picture above is of Lake Altus, which almost surrounds Quartz mountain state park. Camile Carter and Ann Thaggard, both of Altus, rest on one of the granite boulders which line the lake shore. (T-4-15-54) This is how Lake Altus Appeared in 1949 Here is a 1949 picture of Lake Altus taken from approximately the same point as the picture on the opposite page.
