The recovery of plutonium has been demonstrated in a laboratory countercurrent horizontal extractor using the TTA process. Using three extractive stages and two washing stages in each step, a recovery of 91 percent has been obtained in the chelation step and a recovery of 99.9+ percent in the de-chelation step. With five extractive stages, recoveries of 94-98 percent have been found for the chelation step.

Field work in White Canyon was initiated to determine reserves of uranium ores and to determine the nature of the physical, geological, and economic conditions affecting mining and milling of such ores.

NaK alloy at temperatures up to 400 C was used in the test. The large currents required were obtained from rectifiers or from a homopolar generator constructed for the purpose."

It is concluded that NaAlCl4 and Al(NO3)3.9H2O are preferable to the other agents, especially with regard to rate of dissolution and ease of manipulation."

Positive and negative mesons produced in a common target in the cyclotron are received in two photographic plates. In the magnetic field of the cyclotron, negatives are deflected to one plate, positives to the other. The mesons must pass through an absorber before entering the plates in order to be observable.

Preface: The existence of adequate experimental equipment, in particular the two operating cyclotrons of the Radiation Laboratory and the large 184-inch unit under construction, together with a nucleus of trained personnel, made it inevitable that work in connection with the war effort would be prosecuted vigorously at the University of California.
