This is an area of sand soils often lacking uniformity to permeable depth. The uneven windbreak at the lower left particularly illustrates this variation in depth. The taller thriftier trees are growing in six feed of permeable soil while the shorter less vigorous stands are on soils as shallow as two feet. Note effective furrow and windbreak in center, right."

Washita County Windbreak

Photograph of a windbreak, which is in the background of this photograph. Furthermore, numerous but UNIDENTIFED plants grow in the foreground. The original photograph sleeve proclaims, "Windbreaks – The uneven skyline of the windbreak reflects the soil depth in which the trees grew. The permeable soil depths range from two feet in the stretches of shorter trees to five feet under the taller trees. This windbreak is located in Washita County, Oklahoma, a short distance North of Dill City, Oklahoma and one-eight miles north of the intersection of Dill Highway and State Highway 41."

The structure was built where formerly a dangerous wooden bridge spanned a gully on a school bus and mail route. County Commissioners furnished the pipe and the Soil Conservation District put in a fill through the Soil Conservation Service Flood Control program. The permanent basin is full of water. OK-9600-D.

Drainage area in good condition. 4 drop inlets are above this structure which will hold the silt from above it. Permanent storage – 30 surface acres; 195 ac. ft. & 1.8 ac. Inches. Flood pool 56 surface acres; 380 ac. ft. & 3.5 ac. inches. Peak flow uncontrolled (25 year frequency) approximately 3000 cfs. Release rate from reservoir at present time approximately 400 cfs. Drop inlet is 3 ft. 6 inch concrete box with concrete stilling basin. It is planned to put cap on drop inlet to out discharge to 60 cps. Benefit cost ratio 5.3/11. See Okla-8601-A, B, & C. and Okla-9537."
