A PreliminaryReport on the Mechanism of the Decomposition ofDiacetyl Peroxide in Acetic Acid (open access)

A PreliminaryReport on the Mechanism of the Decomposition ofDiacetyl Peroxide in Acetic Acid

The decomposition of diacetyl peroxide in acetic acid-2-C{sup 14} has been studied, The activity of the products in general confirmed the mechanism of the reaction as proposed by Kharasch and Gladstone, The presence and distribution of activity in the methyl acetate produced in this reaction is not explained by the previously proposed mechanism. There was no appreciable exchange of acetic acid and diacetyl peroxide under the conditions of the reaction. Essentially no exchange of methyl acetate and acetic acid was observed when those reagents mere heated at 100 for five hours.

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis VII Respiration andPhotosynthesis (open access)

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis VII Respiration andPhotosynthesis

The relationship of respiration to photosynthesis in barley seedling leaves and the algae, Chlorella and Scenedesmus, has been investigated using radioactive carbon dioxide and the techniques of paper chromatography and radioautography. The plants are allowed to photosynthesize normally for thirty seconds in c{sup 14}O{sub 2} after which they are allowed to respire in air or helium in the light or dark. Respiration of photosynthetic intermediates as evidenced by the appearance of labeled glutomic, isocitric, fumaric and succinic acids is slower in the light than in the dark. Labeled glycolic acid is observed in barley and algae. It disappears rapidly in the dark and is maintained and increased in quantity in the light in C0{sub 2}-free air.

Master-Slave Manipulator (open access)

Master-Slave Manipulator

A device for manipulating a pair of tongs behind a shielding barrier has been built and tested. It is called a Master-Slave Manipulator because the slave tongs move in exact correspondence with a master handle. The "slave hands" follow the master hands in complete synchronism. This is the first completely master-slave manipulator known to exist and has proved that this type of manipulation is very successful when the unit is prooperly engineered and built.

Supplemental Technical Report on an Improved Process for the Manufacture of High Purity Calcium, Period Covered November 10, 1948 to January 31, 1949

Abstract. Experimental work was carried out to improve material conversion efficiency and to reduce handling costs inherent in the present process for production of high purity calcium. Charges up to 54 pounds were handled successfully in the equipment available. Material losses were reduced and more complete removal of alkali and alkaline earth metals was effected by controlled pressures of inert gas and by melting under positive pressure of Argon.

Decomposition of Water at High Temperatures and Pressures Under Reactor Irradiation

Partial abstract: "The investigation of the high temperature and pressure dissociation of water under irradiation was undertaken by the Power Pile Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory in an effort to determine the degree of importance of the phenomenon with respect to the design of a high temperature water-cooled power reactor. Theory and past experimentation indicate that net steady-state dissociation is determined by the rates of the dissociation and recombination reactions under the imposed conditions, the dissociation rate being essentially a function of flux and the recombination rate essentially a function of temperature" (p. 3).

Methods of Opacity Calculations (open access)

Methods of Opacity Calculations

"Methods for calculating the opacity of materials at high temperatures are discussed in this report. Minor improvements are outlined for the treatment of continuous absorption processes, and a small error usually made in treating the scattering process is corrected. In contrast to all previous calculations of opacity, the effect of line absorption is carefully examined, for it may well be the dominant process under certain conditions of temperature and density. Detailed methods for calculating the line absorption contribution are, therefore, developed. To illustrate the principles involved, the opacity of pure iron at a temperature of 1000 volts and normal density is worked out in detail" (p. ii).
