A study of proposed semi-parallel and complete parallel operations of the Canyon and concentration Buildings, 200 Areas (open access)

A study of proposed semi-parallel and complete parallel operations of the Canyon and concentration Buildings, 200 Areas

Due to a forecasted increase in pile area production as well as a possible decrease in batch size of the separations process, an increase in the capacities of the separations plants is indicated. It is the purpose of this report to review this relationship in the light of existing data and to determine how this additional capacity can best be attained through the use of either the proposed semiparallel or complete parallel methods of operation. Emphasis will necessarily be given to consideration of cost, timing, use of minimum buildings and equipment, and the obtaining of optimum production time cycles.

The present status of polonium tolerance estimation. Biology seminar, February 1, 1949 (open access)

The present status of polonium tolerance estimation. Biology seminar, February 1, 1949

Despite the fact the adequate data from long-term, chronic experiments on the effects of Po{sup 210} are not available, some sort of a working figure for the maximum permissible body content of polonium is desirable. As described herein, calculations involved in determining the permissible body content of polonium generally fall into three classes. 1. Comparison of X-ray and polonium toxicity and application of an acceptable X-ray tolerance figure. 2. Assumption of a most sensitive organ and computation of the critical concentration of radioactive material present in this organ under conditions such that the organ received an assumed maximum permissible exposure over an indefinitely long period of time. 3. Comparison of radium and polonium toxicity with application of an acceptable maximal content of radium.

Refrigeration System Used in Mercury Isotope Collections (open access)

Refrigeration System Used in Mercury Isotope Collections

From introduction: During 1948, the Isotope Research and Production Division undertook to obtain small quantities of nearly pure mercury isotopes by electromagnetic isotope separation. The possible use of a mercury isotope of even-numbered mass to establish an international standard of length required an isotopic purity greater than 99 per cent. It, became apparent that this degree of separation could only be achieved by preventing random diffusion of un-ionized mercury which otherwise would contaminate the isotope collectors.

Compilation of data on composition of bismuth phosphate process metal wastes (open access)

Compilation of data on composition of bismuth phosphate process metal wastes

The available information on the ionic and radiochemical composition of current and aged bismuth phosphate process wastes is tabulated here for the convenience of those concerned with metal recovery. In addition to its application in the design of research and development experiments, the compilation may serve to suggest specific needs for additional analytical data. For convenience in chemical calculation, molar compositions have been calculated for the ionic constituents based on the g/1 values usually reported. The dates of radiochemical analyses required for decay calculations should be available from the Analytical Sections at ORNL and HW.
