Effect of Temperature on Beta-Ray Measurements

Summary: "This report investigates photographic methods of measuring beta radiation and includes a study of temperature effects on these measurements. Experimental data are submitted to show that an increase in film temperature before and during beta irradiation causes a definite increase in density for the same dosage. Recommendations drawn from experience gained in the experimental works are offered."

Requirements for heater test element (open access)

Requirements for heater test element

The test unit is to simulate the conditions existing in the ``active``section of a pile process tube. This section is loaded with 64 slugs each of length equal to 4.3767 inches, giving an overall active length of 23.34 feet. The figure of 4.3767 inches is the overall length of the aluminum can, rather than that of the slug proper. The calculations tabulated on the accompanying data sheet are representative of the conditions of operation of the ``maximum performance tube`` in the pile. The resistance of a heater element with the specified wall thickness is such as to give a total heating of 552 Kw (corresponding to an 800 mw operating level) with a current of 13,000 amperes flowing through the tube. The heating distribution is a sine curve with a maximum heating of 33.56 Kw/ft. at the center. No attempt will be made to simulate the heating distribution in the aluminum end cap.

Meeting of laboratory and medical directors, October 21 and 22, 1949, Donner Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, California (open access)

Meeting of laboratory and medical directors, October 21 and 22, 1949, Donner Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, California

The meetings divided into two parts, with reviews of work being done in radiobiology at the University of California by various members of their staff as part one, and, as part two, a meeting conducted by Dr. Shields Warren for Laboratory Directors and their representatives. For the most part papers which were reviewed were summarized material which has appeared in the literature and gave progress to date. Since the purpose of the meeting itself was more for the informal directors meetings, results of the latter are here abstracted.

Effect of Tensor Range in Nuclear Two-Body Problems (open access)

Effect of Tensor Range in Nuclear Two-Body Problems

The interaction between neutron and proton in the triplet state has been investigated. The central and tensor potentials have been assumed to be of the ''meson'' type but of possibly different ranges. The variational-iterational method has been utilized to determine V{sub o}, the strength of the central potential, and {gamma}V{sub o}, the strength of the tensor potential. A wide variation in the values of both central and tensor ranges were included. Calculations of this type have proved difficult in the past principally because of the sensitivity of the results to the quadrupole moment Q of the deuteron for which accurate wave functions are necessary. It would be desirable to have a more accurate value of Q deduced from experiment. The percent D state in the deuteron and the effective triplet range have also been computed. The results are applied to the discussion of the magnetic moment of the deuteron, the photoelectric disintegration of the deuteron, and neutron-proton scattering. It is concluded that experimental information on neutron-proton interaction at their present accuracy does not determine the range of the tensor forces except within rather broad limits. A decrease in the uncertainty in the triplet range by an order of magnitude would …

An introduction to the physical aspects of helicopter stability (open access)

An introduction to the physical aspects of helicopter stability

"In order to provide engineers interested in rotating-wing aircraft but with no specialized training in stability theory some understanding of the factors that influence the flying qualities of the helicopter, an explanation is made of both the static stability and the stick-fixed oscillation in hovering and forward flight in terms of fundamental physical qualities. Three significant stability factors - static stability with angle of attack, static stability with speed, and damping due to a pitching or rolling velocity - are explained in detail" (p. 1).

A Comparison of Wing Loads Measured in Flight on a Fighter-Type Airplane by Strain-Gage and Pressure Distribution Methods

Note presenting pressure distribution measurements made on the wing of a fighter-type airplane to determine the span loading and to compare center-of-pressure results with those obtained by strain-gage measurements on the same airplane during a previous flight investigation. Flight tests were all made at a pressure altitude of about 30,000 feet and covered a Mach number range from approximately 0.35 to 0.81. Results regarding additional air load, spanwise center of pressure of additional air load, basic air load distribution, and span loading during a stall and buffeting are provided.

Data on the Compressive Strength of 75S-T6 Aluminum-Alloy Flat Panels Having Small, Thin, Widely Spaced, Longitudinal Extruded Z-Section Stiffeners

"The experimental results are presented for the second part of an investigation of the compressive strength of 75S-T6 aluminum-alloy flat panels with longitudinal extruded Z-section stiffeners. This part of the investigation is particularly concerned with panels in which the ratio of the thickness of the stiffener material to the skin material is small and the ratio of stiffener spacing to skin thickness is large" (p. 1).
