Abstract: "The critical mass both of an untamped and water-tamped sphere with parabolic radial variation of the intrinsic buckling is calculated by a perturbation method. The result is applied to finding the minimum critical mass of plutonium in water suspension with infinite water temper; the calculations show that the minimum critical mass at constant concentration may be reduced by an amount of the order of 7.6% when the concentration of plutonium is permitted to vary throughout the suspension."

This is a letter of transmittal which describes the waste disposal problem at the Hanford Site. These disposal problems were discussed with the United States Geologic Survey, Atomic Energy Commission, and General Electric on October 27, 1949. Conclusions from this meeting is the main text of this letter.

Redox operations and waste metal recovery are reported. Construction in the 100-H, 100-DR, P-10 area pile areas and in the 234-5, 241-BY waste storage, and redox areas, process areas and Richland village are described. Visitor information is given. And construction progress at Schenectady is reported.

This is a report on Analytical Services of the Pile Area Laboratories at Hanford. Pertinent facts are listed regarding the analytical services currently provided by the Analytical Section in the pile areas. The work of the Analytical Section in the pile areas may be classified into five categories as follows: Analysis of pile process water, analysis of power plant (boiler) waters, analysis of drinking water, analysis of columbia (non-process) and Yakima River water, and preparation of reagents and standard solutions.

"The following report is meant to serve a two fold purpose. First, it is the quarterly report of the homogeneous reactor project for the Technical Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Secondly, it is a description and general feasibility discussion of a 200-1000 K.W. pilot model, homogeneous reactor."

Report presenting a wind-tunnel investigation of two NACA 7-series type airfoils, one with 17.7-percent chord thickness and one with 15.4-percent chord thickness, each quipped with a 30-percent-airfoil-chord double slotted flap, a slot-lip aileron, and a trailing-edge Frise aileron with two amounts of overhang balance. Measurements of airfoil lift and drag, Frise aileron hinge moment, and slot-lip aileron hinge moment were obtained through a large range of deflection of flap, Frise aileron, and slot-lip aileron and section angle of attack. Satisfactory lateral control can be obtained by using this combination of airfoils, flaps, and ailerons.

Report presenting an investigation to determine the hydrodynamic characteristics of two aerodynamically refined planing-tail hulls. One hull had an afterbody shaped like a tapered boom and the other had two afterbodies with tapered booms fairing out of engine nacelles. Results regarding take-off stability and trim, landing stability, spray, resistance, directional stability, and static transverse stability are presented.

Report presenting wind-tunnel tests up to a Mach number of 0.85 to determine the effects of wing-tip gun turrets on the aerodynamic characteristics of a typical bomber-wing model. Lift, drag, and pitching-moment data are presented for the wing alone; for the wing with the turrets in the clean condition; and for the wing and the turrets with guns and sighting equipment. The turrets had negligible effect on the lift and pitching-moment characteristics of the wing.

"A method is presented for determining the effect of time lag in an automatic stabilization system on the lateral oscillatory stability of an airplane. The method is based on an analytical-graphical procedure. The critical time lag of the airplane-autopilot system is readily determined from the frequency-response analysis. The method is applied to a typical present-day airplane equipped with an automatic pilot sensitive to yawing acceleration and geared to the rudder so that rudder control is applied in proportion to the yawing acceleration" (p. 1).

Resolution of the products of the reactions of DPN and ATP with ultraviolet light by techniques of partition paper chromatography is reported in this paper.

"An investigation was conducted to determine the longitudinal- and lateral-stability characteristics of a 0.5-scale model of the Fairchild Lark missile. The model was tested with 0 deg and with 22.5 deg of roll. Three horizontal wings having NACA 16-009, 16-209, and 64A-209 sections were tested. Pressures were measured on both pointed and blunt noses" (p. 1).
