Direct Current Electromagnetic Pumps
Abstract: "A number of direct current conduction type electromagnetic pumps for liquid metals were constructed. Pumping capacities of over 400 gpm and efficiencies of over 50 percent were obtained. NaK alloy at temperatures up to 400 C was used in the test. The large currents required were obtained from rectifiers or from a homopolar generator constructed for the purpose."

Progress Report on Carnotite Studies; Carbonate Processes: September 1949
This is a progress report on the carbonate process, compiled by the chemical development department of the Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Corporation's Y-12 plant, covering the month of September, 1949. In the previous month, the problem of immediate interest to the Monticello operation were listed. Projects that were left incomplete during that time were continued during this month, as well as a brief investigation of the process in which raw ore is leached with sodium carbonate, the sands and slime separated, the sands leached with acid, and the slimes roasted in a pellitized form.

Stepwise Calculation for the Determination of the Number of Transfer Units in Countercurrent Extraction Columns
Report discussing a method for the stepwise calculation of the number of transfer units utilized in a given solvent extraction operation. "Use of the method results in a very appreciable saving in time of calculation with an error of 1.5% for the runs tested. The error tends to become smaller with increasing total numbers of transfer units involved."

Life Tests of Tungsten and Tantalum Filaments in Ion Gauges
Results of an investigation carried on for the following purposes: (1) To determine the relative life of filaments when operated at low emission (low temperatures) as compared to those operated at high emission values. (2) To determine the nature of the dependence of life upon the initial diameter of the filament. (3) To determine the effect of varying concentrations of water vapor and air upon the life of the filaments. (4) To determine the relative life characteristics of tantalum as compared to tungsten.

Dissolution of Uranium Tetrafluoride
"Five new dissolution processes for uranium tetrafluoride are discussed-the NH4OH-H2O2 method, the H2SC4 - (NH4)2S2O8 method, the AlCl3 method, the NaAlcl method, and the Al (NO3)3.9E2O method. It is concluded that NaAlCl4 and Al(NO3)3.9H2O are preferable to the other agents, especially with regard to rate of dissolution and ease of manipulation."

Summary of Research on Experimental Refractory Bodies of High-Melting Nitrides, Carbides, and Uranium Dioxide
Abstract: A procedure for the preparation of the nitrides and carbides of several metals and the preparation of the refractory bodies from them is described. The investigation shows that reasonably strong and dense bodies can be prepared from these materials as well as from UO₂. Evidence showing the tendency toward instability at high temperatures of Be₃N₂, TaN, and ThN is presented. Evidence is also given indicating that the hexagonal structure reported by others for TaN is actually that for Ta₂N. A lattice for Th₂N₃ is proposed. The melting points of ThN, UN, and UC are determined to be 2630 ± 50°C,2650 ± 100°C, and 2590 ± 50°C respectively.
