Monsanto Chemical Company Unit 3 progress report, January 16--31, 1948
This monthly report provides brief progress descriptions of a number of projects being conducted at Mound Laboratory. Projects include sensitivity of the scaler used for neutron counting, purity of postum (Polonium 210), vapor pressure of postum, resistivity of postum, vapor pressure of selenium,and x-ray diffraction studies to determine the coefficients of expansion for aluminum, copper, lead,and gold.

The equipment for the Bismuth-II process has been mounted and is ready for installation at Unit IV. The major portion of the gamma activity in the aluminum jackets is known to consist of iron and one of the following elements: zinc, cobalt, manganese, and nickel. Accordingly, a separation of these elements from aluminum should be obtained by precipitation from a concentrated sodium hydroxide solution to which sodium peroxide is added. Experiment showed that 88 per cent of the gamma activity was separated by this method. Experiments have been run on the equilibrium between postum ions, postum metal, arsenious acid, and arsenic metal in hydrochloric acid. From these preliminary results it is believed possible to accurately measure the potential of postum relative to arsenic. However, before the potential of postum can be determined, it will be necessary to obtain more accurate measurements on the potential of arsenic.

Calorimetry: Twenty-six samples have been assayed for other groups; unit IV calorimeters agree with Unit III calorimeters to 0.5 per cent; the calorimeters of type 30 are practically finished. Experiments on the significance of speed and sensitivity continue and are discussed at length; and a 2.68 Curie sample for tests of heat distribution error has been procured. Mathematical Analysis: The half-life determination from the third set of Unit III counting room data was completed; the formula developed by the Calorimetry Group for the speed of calorimeters was evaluated; and text books and articles treating the theory of probability and its application, especially counting techniques, have been studied.
