Report presenting testing in the two-dimensional low-turbulence tunnels on a 24-inch-chord model of the NACA 66(215)-116 a = 0.6 airfoil with a 0.25-chord slotted flap. The optimum flap pivot positions were found for three different conditions. The conditions were determined from a consideration of the landing, take-off, and strafing requirements of the airplane.

Application of Spring Tabs to Elevator Controls

Equations are presented for calculating the stick-force characteristics obtained with a spring-tab type of elevator control. The main problems encountered in the design of a satisfactory elevator spring tab are to provide stick forces in the desired range, to maintain the force per g sufficiently constant throughout the speed range, to avoid undesirable "feel" of the control in ground handling or in flight at low airspeeds, and to prevent flutter. Examples are presented to show the design features of spring tabs required to solve these problems for airplanes of various sizes.

Axial Fatigue Tests at Zero Mean Stress of 24S-T Aluminum-Alloy Sheet With and Without a Circular Hole

"Axial fatigue tests were made on 189 coupon specimens of 0.032-inch 24S-T aluminum-alloy sheet and a few supplementary specimens of 0.004-inch sheet. The mean load was zero. The specimens were restrained against lateral buckling by lubricated solid guides described in a previous report on this project. About two-thirds of the 0.032-inch specimens were plain coupons nominally free from stress raisers. The remainder contained a 0.1285-inch drilled hole at the center where the reduced section was 0.5 inch wide" (p. 1).

Cooling water requirements in 212 buildings

This document provides plots of expected rates of heat evolution rates of heat evolution from irradiated metal which may be useful in estimating the cooling water flow required in the the 212 buildings. A comparison of three sources of data found in the Project Handbook is provided. The CN 526 calculations agree very well with the estimates of 16, 32 and 64 days decay periods. CN 526 information was used for calculating the heat evolution rates shown in the following figures, since the data does not cover decay periods under 16 days, and does not include the 93{sup 239} contribution. The expected BTU/Min.(Ton) heat liberation rate vs. cooling time in days for through operating periods is shown. The operating level is taken as 2000 KW/Ton; the BTU/Min.(Ton) liberated may be scaled to higher or lower operating levels by arithmetic ratio. A similar curve in which the cooling water required (GPM/Ton) is substituted for BTU/Min.(Ton) is provided. The metric ton and a water temperature rise of 25{degree}C (45{degree}F) are assumed. Correlation of the drag characteristics of a typical pursuit airplane obtained from high-speed wind-tunnel and flight tests

In order to obtain a correlation of drag data from wind-tunnel and flight tests at high Mach numbers, a typical pursuit airplane, with the propeller removed, was tested in flight at Mach numbers up to 0.755, and the results were compared with wind-tunnel tests of a 1/3-scale model of the airplane. The tests results show that the drag characteristics of the test airplane can be predicted with satisfactory accuracy from tests in the Ames 16-foot high-speed wind tunnel of the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory at both high and low Mach numbers. It is considered that this result is not unique with the airplane.

Critical combinations of shear and transverse direct stress for an infinitely long flat plate with edges elastically restrained against rotation

An exact solution and a closely concurring approximate energy solution are given for the buckling of an infinitely long flat plate under combined shear and transverse direct stress with edges elastically restrained against rotation. It was found that an appreciable fraction of the critical stress in pure shear may be applied to the plate without any reduction in the transverse compressive stress necessary to produce buckling. An interaction formula in general use was shown to be decidedly conservative for the range in which it is supposed to apply.

Report presenting compression tests on six 24S-T aluminum alloy curved sheet-stringer panels 12 inches in length and 24 inches in width, reinforced by six Zeo stringers spaced 4 inches between centers. The increase in developed width had no significant effect on the strain for buckling of sheet between stringers, the strain for buckling of sheet between rivets, the load carried per sheet bay, or the stress at failure.

Report presenting an investigation into the importance of stick force as a criterion of longitudinal stability with special reference to transient effects for maneuvers of short duration. The analysis showed that different combinations of elevator parameters which give the same stick force per unit acceleration in turns give widely different force variations during the entries into and recoveries from steady turns and during maneuvers of short duration such as abrupt pull-ups.
